New look for Red Lion Ashington – now open!

Red Lion open fire

The Red Lion in Ashington re-opened to guests with a smart new look on Saturday 19th November.

Sussex Local visited for the Press Night on Tuesday 22nd November. Editor Kris Thomas, “The venue looked really inviting with globe string lights and attractive potted plants on the patio. The decor is the perfect mix of comfortable and stylish and the roaring fire in the centre of the restaurant makes a great focal point. We were given a really friendly welcome and the choice of Gin is very impressive!”

Natural, earthy tones have been used throughout the scheme, with wildlife-inspired wallpaper adding colour and interest. With two new feature horseshoe booths with fluted backs ideal for intimate dinners, a new wine wall in the main dining area, and a cosy snug with loose laid rugs suited for a winter warming tipple, the updated Red Lion is perfect for any occasion.

Serving a top-quality menu featuring fresh flavours inspired by the seasons and modern world-food trends, guests can choose from a broad range of premium grill dishes and plenty of healthier and lower calorie options as well as a good Vegan offering.

Leading the kitchen team is Head Chef Emmanuel, working alongside an expert team of chefs using the very best ingredients. Whether you fancy something from the grill, such as Rotisserie Pork Belly or expertly aged Steaks, there’s something to suit all tastes. Showcasing seasonal flavours, from Pan-Fried Wild Scallops with Smoked Haddock Bonbons to Buttermilk Chicken Brie & Bacon Pie, the menu is packed full of irresistible creations and comforting classics, plus a dedicated vegan menu.

The lunch menu includes dishes under 650 calories, hand-stretched stone-baked pizzas and freshly prepared sandwiches. A brunch menu of classic favourites and healthy alternatives is also be served from 9am on Saturdays and Sundays.

There is also an extensive cocktail menu, which includes classics with a twist, such as a Koko Colada, everyone’s favourite Martinis and a selection of Spritz. On Sundays, diners can enjoy a hearty roast with all the trimmings with family and friends.

Kris who has visited the Red Lion on many previous occasions, commented on the new menu; “I really thought the menu offered something for everyone and there’s a children’s menu too.  I chose a starter of prawns with sweet chilli and feta which was served in a delightful copper pan. It was delicious, with plenty of warming garlic and chili flavours. For a main course I opted for rump of lamb which was served pink (or to your liking) with a rich red wine sauce and roasted veg. The lamb was tender with a moreish chargrilled flavour. There’s a good choice of warm and chilled desserts too. If you can’t decide, I can definitely recommend the trio of cheesecakes giving you three different flavours to enjoy.”

As part of the refurbishment, the pub has received a full makeover, creating an extended outdoor space able to be used by guests all year round. Inside the pub, the new layout includes several new areas allowing The Red Lion to accommodate private events for smaller, as well as larger, parties. With three open fireplaces guests will be tempted to find a cosy corner in which to while away a winter afternoon.
