Key landmarks of Stopham

The village’s crowning glory is its Elizabethan bridge, which replaced an even older wooden crossing around 1426. The bridge is listed as an ancient monument, and has been solely for pedestrian use in recent times to allow visitors to admire its structure and the river running below.

It was home to the Barttelot family, who have been Baronets since 1875. The family is descended from Norman nobles who crossed to England with William the Conqueror and made this quaint village their home. The family manor house stands just outside the hamlet itself, retaining its exterior grandeur and presence though the interior has now been converted into flats.

Also, close to the manor house, sits the church of St Mary the Virgin. It features beautiful stained glass windows that commemorate the Barttelot family.

On the northernmost point of the village you’ll find the White Hart. The pub offers views of the timeless bridge, as well as fine wines and highly recommended food. Located in the South Downs National Park, and adjacent to the river, it is the perfect spot to view some of Sussex’s best wildlife.
