The Queens Head

The Queens Head is a family-run pub set in the heart of West Chiltington village, surrounded by beautiful Sussex countryside.

I was delighted to be invited there to enjoy a three-course meal. We went on a Friday evening and the atmosphere was very warm and welcoming.  We were greeted at the bar and shown to our table, where our drinks shortly followed.

The menu is locally sourced (whenever possible), freshly homemade and cooked to order by owner and head chef Steph. There was a good selection of starters, mains and desserts to suit all with a separate specials menu too.

I opted for Halloumi fries with a sweet chilli jam, to start. Sussex Local editor Kris ordered the crispy Calamari (her favourite), which didn’t disappoint! Both starters were served alongside a mixed baby-leaf salad with a sprinkling of pomegranate and pumpkin seeds, finished with a drizzle of balsamic dressing. Delicious!

For main course, I thoroughly enjoyed the deep-filled steak, ale and mushroom pie, served with the creamiest of mash potato and savoy cabbage.  The steak was extremely tender and melted in the mouth and was encased in a beautiful all-butter pastry.  The red wine gravy was full of flavour and really complemented the dish.   Steak Pie

Kris had a medium-rare sirloin steak cooked to perfection.  It was served with a creamy peppercorn sauce, mushrooms, green beans and a generous serving of fries.  Other tempting mains included smoked Gammon steak, Beer Battered Cod, Mussels in a Garlic and White Wine Sauce and a selection of homemade burgers.

Kris couldn’t decide on which red wine to accompany her steak and the barman kindly offered a sample of both the Malbec and Shiraz.

There was a very tempting desert menu and I had just enough room to enjoy the Biscoff cheesecake, beautifully presented with a homemade, vanilla semifreddo (ice cream) and a coffee macaroon.

Kris enjoyed a warming berry crumble, sprinkled with freeze dried raspberries and served with a jug of light, velvety-smooth custard.  There was also the option of a raspberry and pistachio semifreddo, brownie or the “Queens” Cheeseboard.

As the hub of the village, the pub has launched a library with books and a computer with free access and visitors are welcome in the daytime for coffee or lunch as well as in the evenings.

Regular live music, quizzes and seafood nights mean something ‘special’ is always happening, and the pub caters for private functions too.

Up until 30th November 2021 you have the chance to win a meal for two – click here to enter – good luck!
