Remembrance Sunday
The ceramic poppies workshop in Bury Village Hall was a big success. The initial idea was that of one of Bury Primary School’s teachers. By the time of the workshop, Coldwaltham School, and Dorset House had joined into the project too.
These poppies will be used for the Remembrance Sunday service at St John’s Bury (10.50am at the War Memorial, followed by a Remembrance service in the church). The WWI names on the war memorial are still familiar to us nowadays, and often members of the family that have moved away, come back to Bury to commemorate.
The children at school found out more about these servicemen and this information will make them more than just ‘names’. Of course the shock is always how young these men were. The local recruitment office where they signed up was in Petworth, which must be an hour’s walk away, and you wonder how many of them had told their families where and why they walked off that day.
Macmillan Coffee Morning
One of our residents organised the Macmillan Coffee Morning during October. She hoped to raise about £1,000, and worked really hard to find sponsors and cake makers etc. She actually raise a staggering £1,925. A huge thank you to Tina and her team who worked so hard to make this event and the cause such a success. We all know of the wonderful work of the Macmillan nurses and their dedication.
Harvest Festival
The church held its Harvest Festival in early October. The evening service was followed by a really good ‘Harvest’ supper in the village hall. The apples were put to good use in the deserts, and there were no overgrown courgettes in sight.
Become a Parish Councillor
The Parish Council still need more Councillors. The more that we have, the less the workload on each one. You need to live in Bury Parish or within three miles as the crow flies, from the boundary, to be eligible.
It is a really important part of keeping Bury a good community and the Council should represent the views of the parishioners and their concerns. Sadly the Councillor who dealt with the A29 issues has now left the area, so we need someone to take this on as a priority before next year’s racing season starts next year.
