Councillor gains unanimous vote at annual meeting
Councillor Joe Pannell has been elected as the new Chairman of the District, following a unanimous vote at the annual meeting of Adur District Council.
Pannell, a long-time resident of the district and active councillor for Widewater Ward in Lancing, where he lives, was described as the perfect next Chairman for the area by the Leader of Adur District Council, Cllr Neil Parkin.
As part of his responsibilities, Cllr Pannell will represent the Council at civic events and closely engage with the communities of Sompting, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate over the next 12 months.
He will be supporting Herons Dale Primary School and helping to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease – raising valuable funds for MNDA West Sussex South branch – during his term in office.
Cllr Pannell said: “It’s an honour to be the new Chairman of the District. Adur’s home and a place which is really close to me and my family, and it’s therefore a privilege and an exciting opportunity for me to give back to the area in the role of Chairman.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting so many of you in the year ahead and working closely with the charities, community groups and local heroes who make our district tick. Please get in touch if you’d like me to support one of your events.”
Previous Chairman and Vice Chairman of Adur District Council
Pannell has succeeded Cllr Andy McGregor, who yesterday finished serving his second term as the area’s first citizen.
Cllr McGregor was applauded by his fellow councillors for his dedication to the role and, after carefully handing the Chairman’s chain over to its new owner, wished Cllr Pannell the best for his term in office.
During the meeting at the Shoreham Centre, Cllr Joss Loader was also elected to the position of Vice Chairman of Adur District Council.
Cllr Loader, who represents Marine Ward in Shoreham, has previously served as both Chairman and Vice Chairman of the district, and was described as the ideal candidate to guide Cllr Pannell through his year as first citizen.
