More Than Volunteering: ABC Animal Sanctuary

Changing Lives—Theirs and Yours

If you’re looking to try something new or give your time to a good cause, volunteering can be more rewarding than you might expect. An animal sanctuary, can offer a unique chance to connect with animals, be outside, be part of a team of people with a common goal. For just a few hours a week it offers more than experience – it gives you purpose.

Providing care & protection

The ABC Animal Sanctuary in West Chiltington is nestled in a peaceful setting where the only sounds are animals and birdsong. The sanctuary cares for cats, pigs, horses, donkeys, birds, goats and sheep in need of a safe home. It aims to provide care and protection, and where possible, find them a forever home – otherwise, they live out their lives at the sanctuary.

We asked some of the volunteers what it is like to help at the sanctuary.

Q: What first inspired you to volunteer at the sanctuary?

A: I had some time off work for mental health reasons, and after one of my cats passed away, I wanted to focus on my wellbeing. I started looking for volunteering opportunities. Since I work from home at a desk, this gives me a chance to get outside, get fresh air, exercise, be around animals, and connect with people. Being in such a beautiful natural environment really enriches the soul. Whatever the weather, the animals still need care—and with the right clothing, I always enjoy it.

A: I work in a busy London office job that can be stressful, so coming to the ABC feels like a complete escape. It’s peaceful and rural, the people are lovely, and I feel I can really make a difference in the cattery. Plus, spending time petting cats is my idea of heaven!

Q: Have you ever worked with animals before?

A: No, but I had an induction and shadowed someone during my first session. Everyone was very kind and welcoming, and I was taught everything I needed to know. We usually work in pairs, and our Team Leader is always around to help.

A: I have my own horses but  but it has been great to work with the other animals like the pigs, goats, birds etc. I love the camaraderie with other volunteers and the chance to give back – I even adopted one of the horses, the beautiful Maggie.

Q: What keeps you coming back?

A: It’s the sense of satisfaction – helping the animals, leaving everything clean and settled, and seeing them content. Spending time outdoors in such a beautiful setting, along with catching up with friends for a chat and a laugh, makes it really rewarding – I’ve been coming back for 7 years now!

Q: What is the most rewarding experience at the ABC, even on a tough day?

A: Seeing new animals arrive, come out of their shells, bond with others, and thrive is incredibly rewarding. Even in bad weather, it lifts your mood—the animals settle quickly here, and the atmosphere is wonderful.

A: Watching the animals play together, like Hutch and Glen the donkeys, or hearing the chickens and ducks happily splashing around—that’s reward enough.

Q: Are there any animals here you’ve particularly bonded with, and what have they taught you?

A: You’re not meant to have favourites, but Hutch the donkey stands out—he’s cheeky, always causing mischief, even breaking into the feed room and once running off with my coat. He’s taught me how much animals can lift your mood.

A: You inevitably connect more with certain cats. One was Scruff, an elderly resident who’d been with his owner all his life—full of character, loving cuddles, and adored by everyone. It’s also so rewarding to see timid cats grow in confidence and go on to loving homes.

Q: How long have you been volunteering here?

A: I’ve been volunteering here for about four years. I first came along to help my dad, who volunteered here, and then decided to get involved more regularly. I’ve always loved animals, so it felt like a natural fit. My favourite part is meeting new, like-minded people and making great friends. I work full time, so volunteering is a real release at the weekend—doing something different, with no pressure, just enjoying time, really being myself and being with the animals.

Considering volunteering?
