Aldingbourne, Barnham and Eastergate to ask residents about local need for Affordable Housing

The Community Land Trust for Aldingbourne, Barnham and Eastergate (ABE CLT) is inviting residents to provide information about whether they, or members of their family, are likely to need affordable housing in the villages within the coming years. A house to house survey is being distributed in the next few weeks which residents are asked to look out for and invited to return.

Affordable homes are properties for rent or part-purchase (shared ownership) made available for those who are unable to meet their housing needs on the open market.

The Community Land Trust has been working with Arun District Council, the parish councils for Aldingbourne and Barnham and Eastergate and with developers to identify sites where affordable housing might be provided specifically for people living or working in the 3 villages, or with a strong connection to people living in the villages.

The survey is being administered on behalf of ABE CLT by Action in rural Sussex, an independent organisation that works to support rural communities across East and West Sussex. The survey forms will be gathered and analysed independently with all information kept completely confidential. No personal information will be shared with the Parish Council, Community Land Trust, Local Authority or any other third party.

ABE CLT Chairman Louise Beaton said “Forthcoming development in the villages provides the opportunity for the CLT to acquire some of these homes specifically for the benefit of local residents and people working locally, but we need to know how

many local people are likely to need affordable homes and what kind of homes they are likely to need, in order to deliver the right number of homes at the right sizes.

Affordable housing for rent is usually allocated to those with the highest need from a wide area and so-called affordable housing to buy has often proved beyond the means of young local families. We hope to address that gap and also enable older residents to remain in the villages as their circumstances change.”

Members of the CLT Board will be attending the Annual Parish Meetings to be held at 6pm on 21st May at Aldingbourne Community Sports Centre and at Barnham Community Centre on Tues 28th May to explain how people can register their housing need with us and how they can keep in touch through joining our membership scheme. There will be opportunity to meet them over refreshments.
