Wild swimming & Forest Bathing at South Lodge, Lower Beeding

By editor Kris Thomas

South Lodge Hotel in Lower Beeding is just ten minutes drive south of Horsham. The hotel has three restaurants (one, The Pass, having a Michelin Star) and an impressive spa located in a modern, oak-clad building, separate from the hotel making it ideal for a pampering spa day where visitors are happy to float around in robes.

The hotel’s latest attraction is The Reeds, eight  lakeside lodges situated around the edge of a wild swimming lake. Six of the lodges have two-bedrooms and the two ‘spa’ lodges are just for couples. As well as the whirlpool bath on the terrace, the spa lodges have a steam shower and infrared sauna.

Accessed via a woodland trail, guests have use of The Reeds’ own electric buggies (with a driver) to chauffeur them to and from the hotel where they can dine, and the spa building where they can use the fitness and pool facilities. There is also 24-hour room service for drinks and cold platters with a neat ‘cubby hole’ delivery system so guests are not disturbed.

The striking double-height detached lodges sit on stilts on the banks of the lake with restful views from the open-plan living area and the private fully furnished deck. Reflecting  Exclusive  Collection’s commitment to sustainability, they have been designed to respect the surrounding ecology using innovative, locally sourced or naturally derived materials including zinc roofs and bamboo cladding.

Inside guests will find a range of modern features, including a ‘digital fireplace’ and a climate control system powered by the lake. The biophilic architectural design invites guests to connect to the natural world facilitated by the fully glazed double height windows which offer gorgeous views across the lake.

I was invited to visit for a ‘wild’ swim in the newly renovated lake which I am told will be adorned with water lilies sourced from Monet’s renowned garden in Giverny. It was a bright September morning and the lake sparkled in the sunshine, with a lone duck looking on. I was told the water was 17 degrees and once over the cold shock, the cool, clear water felt wonderful. The benefits of cold water swimming are well documented and my swim was a genuine highlight of the day.

If you are looking for more ways to connect with nature, guests at The Reeds can book a Forest Bathing experience. Originating in Japan in the 1980s, the simple method of being calm and quiet amongst the trees, observing nature around you whilst breathing deeply can help de-stress and boost health and wellbeing. Decades of research has shown that it’s good for your health. It can boost your immune system, lower blood pressure and help with depression. My calming, meditative walk and lie down amongst the trees surrounding South Lodge was a chance to step away from daily pressures and just be thankful.

Rates start from £1,200 per night in a Lakeside Lodge, and £1,400 per night in a Spa Lodge. For more information and to book call 01403 891711  or visit: www.exclusive.co.uk/south-lodge/the-reeds/
