A group of 20 volunteers joined the Friends of Horsham Park litter pick at the weekend, on a mission to remove visible and hidden debris from the town’s beautiful green space.
The litter picks have been organised regularly by the Friends of Horsham Park for several years. This time, the haul included a partial bike frame, a pair of men’s pants and a sports bra, as well as many used vapes. Although much of the debris was found in areas away from the public gaze, its impact on wildlife can still be devastating.
Friends of Horsham Park vice chairman Steve Sandham said: “We were delighted that so many volunteers took the time to help us in this vital task, which really makes a difference to the appearance and safety of the park. We all want to keep Horsham Park free of the rubbish that spoils users’ enjoyment, and can be harmful or even fatal to the birds and other wildlife who share this wonderful space with us. We pick litter every six months or so, as a ‘booster’ to the ongoing great work by Horsham District Council’s Park and Countryside team and other volunteers. Everyone who joins us enjoys the day – it’s really rewarding to fill a bag with rubbish and know you’ve helped to improve the park.”
The Friends of Horsham Park aim to protect, enhance and promote Horsham Park as a place of recreation and enjoyment for the long-term benefit of everyone. Thanks to their campaigning over recent years in partnership with Horsham District Council, the park has been designated as a Fields in Trust, meaning it is protected for future generations to enjoy.
Anyone with an interest in the Park is welcome to join the Friends and get involved in their activities, which include a weekly volunteer gardening session every Wednesday morning, and a Sunday session once a month to tend the ribbon borders around the North Street entrance. The group’s annual fundraising Quiz Night takes place on Friday, 20 November at Trinity Hall.
