V2 Radio Tonnes of Tins campaign
On Monday 23rd May, V2 Radio launched their food poverty appeal – Tonnes of Tins! Running for 6 weeks, they are asking residents of Sussex to add an extra tin or two to their weekly food shop, to donate to the appeal. The aim is to collect as many tonnes as possible of tinned goods to help foodbanks in local communities.
Between 2020 and 2021, the pandemic put a huge amount of pressure on food banks across the country. The Trussell Trust reported that over 2.5million people in the UK used a food bank and over 600,000 more people used the service than the previous year.
Although life is now mostly back to normal, the challenge of tackling food poverty unfortunately continues. With the cost of living on the rise, those who currently live on the poverty line and regularly access food banks are set to feel the financial hit, harder than before, and now it’s more important than ever that food banks are kept stocked.
V2 Radio have partnered with Southern Water and their #HeretoHelp campaign to deliver the Tonnes of Tins Appeal across the County.
How people can donate to Tonnes of Tins
People can donate to this campaign by finding V2 Radio’s collection baskets in local donation points across Sussex and popping their cans in, and they’ll do the rest. Donations will be dropped off at food banks across the county, just in time to support families during the upcoming summer holidays, when stocks are often depleted and without a hot meal at School, often in peak demand.
A full list of the drop off points can be found on the V2 Radio website as well as a link to a Just Giving page where you can donate money instead. Any money donated will be used to purchase tins and other food items that the foodbanks recommend.
Grand Finale Open Day
The Tonnes of Tins appeal will finish with a Grand Finale Open Day at the V2 Radio Station in Chichester on Friday 1st July. Residents and supporters of the appeal are invited to bring their tins and come into the radio station to meet the team. There will be a hive of activity, packing and weighing the donations, ready to be delivered out to the beneficiary foodbanks the following week.
