Feedback sought on updated plans for safer active travel
Residents are being urged to have their say on plans to improve cycling and walking access across Shoreham, Lancing, Sompting and beyond.
The consultation by West Sussex County Council was launched 17th January and seeks feedback on updated plans to make active travel safer and more reassuring for cyclists and walkers.
For Adur residents, there are two key areas up for discussion in the consultation – the stretch of A259 from the Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham to the Brighton & Hove border, and the group of three main roads between Lancing and Sompting.
These include West Street in Sompting to Crabtree Lane in Lancing, the A2025 Grinstead Lane corridor in Lancing and the Western Road corridor which runs from Lancing to Sompting.
With new developments and more traffic putting extra pressure on the area’s roads and paths, Adur District Council has been pushing for improvements to local infrastructure to support active travel.
West Sussex County Council has been developing plans to support this work, with the first version having been published for comment at the beginning of 2022.
Updated proposals for active travel improvements
After acting on feedback from local groups, members of the public and Adur, the county council has now published updated proposals for a second round of engagement on the scheme.
Cllr Steve Neocleous, Adur’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Strategic Planning, said: “Whether you’re passionate about cycling or someone who relies on active travel to get around town, I’d really encourage you to take a look at the updated plans and share your thoughts.
“We are aware that the support for active travel needs in the district needs to be improved, and have been pushing to try and bring these positive changes to fruition. It’s important that cyclists feel safe sharing the roads with motorists, and we want those on foot to have an appropriate number of crossings and footways available to them.
“This scheme must be the starting point for a wide range of transport improvements across the district, as we look to enhance the connectivity between existing and planned pedestrianised routes and address the congestion issues we face.”
