This year’s Bee Market will be held at Heathfield Community College on
Saturday the 18th May commencing at 10am.
A big attraction is the live bee demonstration where visitors can watch an experienced beekeeper open a beehive and handle the bees from behind bee-proof mesh. Admission £1. Free Parking. Hot and cold food and refreshments will be on sale throughout the day.
This year’s Market promises to be the best ever with an indoor auction of live bees and used beekeeping equipment. Trade stands also offer new beekeeping equipment for sale.
Organised by the SBKA, the Bee Market has been held for over 40 years and attracts both
beekeepers and non-Beekeepers to the various talks, displays and stands. Admission £1.
Also, there is a workshop for children, bee related talks, plants sales and, of course, local honey for sale.
Background
In East Sussex, as in the rest of the UK, small scale beekeepers with only one or as many as 50 beehives in gardens, small-holdings and elsewhere in the countryside are helping to protect and conserve our declining population of honeybees.
As members of five local beekeeping groups – Brighton & Lewes, Eastbourne, East Grinstead, Hastings & Rother and High Weald – they are members of Sussex Beekeepers’ Association (SBKA) which in turn Is part of The British Beekeepers’ Association.
