We work hard at Storrington Primary to promote the joy of learning and the importance for everyone to have a go at trying new learning opportunities and experiences.
Children enjoyed a visit from illustrator and author of the award winning “Shackleton’s Journey,” William Grill. Willliam spent the day sharing his drawing expertise with art workshops in Years 2 and 5. Amy and Lucy in Year 2 commented ‘It was really good, we learned how to draw without an outline and we felt happy and proud of our work’.
Ashton in Year 2 added that he ‘was very inspired by him’. After sharing that inspiration in a whole school assembly, William led the teachers in a well-being workshop where they were supported to use different ink drawing techniques. Staff were interviewed by our Year 6 reporters and commented that the workshop ‘made me look at a different side to art’ and ‘helped my confidence and not being afraid to make mistakes!’
To provide the best possible learning for our pupils we work hard to ensure our teaching staff have the opportunity for in-house and external professional development. We are lucky to have three Local Authority Moderators as part of our teaching and leadership team (working in Reception, KS1 and KS2) who are trained on and share key assessment and learning data for core curriculum areas across the school. Learning is extended across all aspects of school life with staff recently attending a Science Conference and Mental Health First Aid course. Government PE funding is used to improve resources and the delivery of PE – this term two staff attended a West Sussex PE Conference which helped deepen their knowledge of teaching PE. Contributors include Year 6 pupils Ruby-Mae and Hannah.

Thakeham Primary School
Spring Term at Thakeham Primary School has been a very busy time! We have been ‘Inspired Learners’ and ‘Learning for Life.’
Year 6 took part in a one week course on how to ride their bikes safely. They were taught by Sue and Jenny (Bikeability, West Sussex) and enjoyed cycling around the school playground and the local area. Year 6 were first taught the A, B, C and D. A is for air, B is for brakes, C is for chain and D is for dress. After every session, they started going out on busier roads and streets. They learnt levels 1 and 2 which were based on: turning, signalling, junction work and overtaking parked cars. At the end of the week though, they got their rewards. They all passed level 1 and 2 with flying colours!
The JRSOs (Junior Road Safety Officers) and the Eco Warriors have worked with Daisy from Sustrans, learning about air quality. They learnt what air pollution is, what causes it and its effects. They leant about alternatives to driving to school such as walking, cycling and scooting! The children even had a chance to campaign and lead an exciting assembly.
Hot off the press we have just celebrated World Book Day, dressing up as lots of different book characters and welcoming the author Abie Longstaff to our school. She has written lots of different books such as: The Fairytale Hairdresser and How to Catch a Witch. We also got to do some fun activities linked to reading and even enjoyed curling up on a pillow, eating toast and sharing our books with our parents.
