On Friday Safe in Sussex hosted its first Gingerbread House Decorating Competition for local businesses. The event was held on Gingerbread Day. There were 6 local companies that took part in the festive competition helping raise awareness and funds for the charity.
The Judge of the competition was Fay Millar owner of Brighton Cakes who made the Gingerbread packs for the competition. This is the first year of their new annual competition to bring festive fun and team bonding to companies whilst increasing awareness and funds to the charity.
AM Trophies, Worthing donated an amazing new trophy for Safe in Sussex to give to the winners each year. The winner this year was Rayner IOL who said “as a local employer Rayner are delighted to be able to support Safe In Sussex and the invaluable work they do for the community. We were very pleased to win the first Safe in Sussex Gingerbread House decorating competition, especially considering the strength of the competition. We look forward to taking part in this event in the future and hope it will continue to grow in popularity”
The other companies that took part were Coop Field Place (who did a sponsored silence to raise the entry fee), EJ Moyles, Kreston Reeves (who had an internal competition first with 7 teams, the winner going forward to this competition), Greenstar Cleaning Services and WPA Healthcare.
All the gingerbread houses will be given to the women and children at the refuges for Christmas. The CEO of Safe in Sussex, Sharon Howard said “it’s great to have companies get involved this Christmas and we look forward to the event getting bigger and better each year”. Safe in Sussex offers advice, support, refuge, awareness and education for women, children and young people across Sussex and the south coast. The charity has 3 confidential refuges, 1 community refuge with a connecting drop in centre (in Littlehampton) and a charity shop (in Broadwater, Worthing).
The refuges are for women and children who flee domestic violence. The refuges are a place where women can feel safe and be given the vital support they need, both practical and emotional.
Here at Safe in Sussex we aim to increase the awareness and stop the cycle of domestic abuse in West Sussex.
We also facilitate support groups for women in the community and healthy relationship education programmes for Primary and Secondary schools in West Sussex.
