Amberley Museum will celebrate more than a century of transport heritage on Sunday 4 October 2026, when over 150 vintage and classic vehicles gather for its Autumn Historic Vehicle Gathering.
Vehicles from across the decades
From cars and motorcycles to steam and stationary engines, historic public transport and commercial vehicles, the event will bring together an impressive variety of vehicles from across the decades. Visitors can see these historic machines on display and moving around the Museum site, while chatting with enthusiastic vehicle owners and Museum volunteers about the stories, engineering and history behind them.
The gathering celebrates the people who have helped make Amberley Museum what it is today, with the Museum having been established in 1978 and supported by generations of dedicated volunteers and staff. There will also be plenty of opportunities to experience historic transport in action. Visitors can enjoy a ride on a vintage bus and travel behind ‘Peter’, Amberley’s 1918 steam locomotive, included as part of the Museum experience.
Take control
For those who want to get closer to the action, Drive a Locomotive offers the chance to take the controls of a locomotive on one of the Museum’s industrial railway lines, without a train attached. This unique hands-on experience is available for a suggested donation of £5.
Set within 36 acres at the foot of the South Downs, Amberley Museum offers a day of handson heritage for visitors of all ages, with historic transport, working exhibits, demonstrations and
collections to explore throughout the site.
