Horsham Runner Battles the Heat to Support Rescue Animals in Need

When Horsham Jogger Alex Stapleton took to the streets of London for the 2025 TCS 45th Anniversary London Marathon, he wasn’t just running for the personal challenge, he was running for a cause close to his heart: helping vulnerable street animals across Eastern Europe.

Running in the 55–59 age category, Alex completed the iconic 26.2-mile course in 4:26:13, despite the searing heat that made this year’s marathon one of the hottest on record. His incredible effort was in aid of K9 Rescue International, a UK-based charity providing lifesaving care for stray and abandoned animals in Ukraine and Macedonia.

Alex’s connection to the charity came through his sister, Gail, who recently adopted a dog from K9 Rescue. Inspired by her experience, Alex stepped forward when he heard they were looking for a runner, saying he felt deeply moved by the suffering of animals caught in crises beyond their control.

His preparation was as committed as his cause. In late March, Alex completed the Cranleigh 21-mile race as part of his training, his longest run before the big day, finishing in 2:55:32. “Training has been going really well, better than I could have hoped,” he said at the time. And just two weeks before the London Marathon, with a few minor injuries under his belt, Alex remained determined: “I’ll be on the start line whatever happens!”

True to his word, he crossed the finish line with pride, collecting a commemorative medal for the event’s 45th anniversary, and has so far raised an incredible £1,250 towards his personal target of £1,500. He’s still hoping to reach that final £250 and is keeping his fundraising page open in case anyone would like to help him across the line. Support Alex’s fundraiser here.

K9 Rescue International supports daily feeding programs, lifesaving emergency veterinary care, and spay/neuter campaigns to prevent the cycle of suffering before it begins in Eastern Europe and Ukraine. Alex’s run has already made a meaningful difference, providing meals, healing, and hope to the animals who need it most.
