Opening Chichester Festival Theatre’s new season on 1st May
Chichester Festival Theatre’s new season opens with The Government Inspector, a brilliantly inventive 19th century comedy of skulduggery, mistaken identity and human absurdity, starring actor and comedian Tom Rosenthal from TV’s Friday Night Dinner (Jonny) and Plebs.
The bureaucrats in a remote provincial town panic when they hear a bigwig government inspector is heading their way. The hospital’s hopeless, the post office has gone to pot, and the streets are filthy.
So when they discover the inspector is already staying at the inn, incognito, the whole town lavishes flattering attention on him. This suits ‘the inspector’ just fine, since in reality he’s a lowly and broke government pen-pusher, nursing extravagant fantasies of fame and fortune – leading to dizzying levels of comic hysteria.
The Government Inspector runs 25 April – 24 May; details and tickets from www.cft.org.uk or call 01243 781312.
