If you’re looking for a fun filled family day, why not head to Tangmere Military Aviation Musuem this summer? Sussex Local has compiled a list of fun events for you to enjoy:
This year’s Museum ‘Family Day’ is on Sunday 4 August between 10 – 5pm and is a fun day out for the whole family with both indoor and outdoor children’s activities. Outside, in addition to other interesting stalls there will be a mini train to ride on. Children come and join in with ‘Make-it and Take-it’ – making your own Airfix model aircraft to take away – last year this was a great attraction and it’s FREE!
In the afternoon we are planning to have a flying display by a Supermarine Spitfire and subject to weather, our outside aircraft cockpits including the famous Harrier jump–jet will be open.
For refreshments there is a NAAFI tea-room, a beer tent and a burger bar.
Reduced entry prices for the day are Adults £8, Children £4 and Family (2+2) £20
‘D-Day at Tangmere 75’ Exhibition 10 August until 1 September

During D-Day, 75 years ago, much of the aerial fighter support for the landings was conducted from Sussex established airfields and temporary Advanced Landing Grounds. Throughout the day the Allies enjoyed complete air superiority, with a total of 1,547 fighter sorties flown over the British/Canadian and American beaches.
Because of its proximity to the Normandy beaches, Sussex was also important for the operational control of the aerial activities. This was conducted from the RAF Tangmere Sector Operations Room set up in the College Hall at Bishop Otter College (now part of the University) in Chichester. During the weekend of 17/18 August a recreation of the D-Day plotting table will be re-enacted.
This temporary exhibition will provide detail on the Sussex D-Day airfields, the fighter aircraft that flew from them and on some of the pilots who flew and fought that day, 75 years ago. Supporting the exhibition will be films and a programme of talks. Entry to the exhibition is included in the Museum entry price and the exhibition is open from 11 am until 4 pm every day.
