A Taste of Tradition in the Heart of Midhurst: the Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa

Nestled in the heart of the South Downs, the market town of Midhurst is steeped in history and charm. With its cobbled streets, independent shops, and proximity to Cowdray Park and the fascinating ruins, it’s a perfect destination for a leisurely afternoon. Few places capture its enchanting character better than the Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa.

Dating back to the 15th century, the hotel is one of England’s oldest coaching inns. Its timber-framed exterior and cosy rooms offer a warm welcome and will delight history lovers. Vintage photographs line the walls, telling stories of the town’s past, while a collection of aged Christmas puddings, all made by previous guests, hangs from the ceiling near the large open fireplace—an unexpected and whimsical touch that adds to the atmosphere.

We were warmly greeted by attentive staff who looked after us very well throughout our visit. The tables were dressed with thick white cloths and elegant crockery, setting the scene for a classic afternoon tea. The quintessential three-tier stand arrived, laden with dainty finger sandwiches—both meat and vegetarian options—followed by freshly baked scones served with traditional clotted cream and homemade jam. The top tier featured a selection of beautifully presented cakes, which proved a particular hit with my sons.

Tea and coffee were replenished frequently and without fuss, allowing us to relax and enjoy the experience at our own pace. The setting, service, and food combined to create a memorable afternoon that felt both indulgent and comforting.

Afternoon tea is served daily from 3–5pm at £31 per person, add a glass of Sussex sparkling wine for £14. Whether you’re a local looking for a treat or visiting Midhurst, the Spread Eagle offers a timeless slice of English hospitality.
