Event Date:
Start time: 10:00 5 sessions with WEA tutor Geoffrey Mead on the history of housing locally The history of UK housing and how it has changed over time, with some of the current concerns on this perpetual topic. The vernacular styles that were the regional specialisations of the pre-railway era were subsumed under the ease of transport of bulky building materials. The 19th century saw a rapid urbanisation of communities, with often dire housing, that led eventually to housing becoming a government issue. The rise of state involvement in housing in the 20th century and the rise and decline of home-ownership will be considered.
