Ever since the first days of capturing an image on film, Brighton and Hove’s famous seafront has been one of the most-photographed places in Britain. The Regency Society, which campaigns to celebrate and protect the city’s heritage, has a unique collection of more than 7,500 images, some dating back to the 1840s in The James Gray Collection. And some of the best of those early photographs are featured in a new exhibition presented by The Regency Society – Photographs of Brighton and Hove from the James Gray Collection which opens at The Gabions, 52-53, Kings Road Arches, Lower Promenade, Brighton BN1 2LN (between the Upside Down House and Brighton i360) on from Monday 17 March to Sunday 27 April 2025. From Victorian shores to wartime waves, the exhibition showcases Brighton and Hove’s vibrant and ever changing history – from the very first pier and ladies-only bathing beaches to aeroplanes landing on the Brunswick Lawns and anti-aircraft guns in front of the Grand Hotel.
