Event Date:
Start time: 19:30 John Wilkes took on both King and Parliament. His story has many parallels with our own times. John Wilkes was an extraordinary figure who upturned politics and culture in eighteenth century England. Wilkes was born on 17th October 1725, so to mark his tri-centenary, Chris Hare will discuss the life of a man who brought down a prime minister, challenged the king, was expelled from parliament and yet was continually re-elected by the people. Today, two pubs in England still bear his name, one is the Wilkes Head at Eastergate in West Sussex. Chris will speculate on Wilkes’ particular popularity in the county, and also ask what lessons the ‘Wilkes and Liberty’ campaign has for us today in 2025.
