By editor Kris Thomas. Visiting Amberley Castle for afternoon tea is an experience that blends centuries of history with warm hospitality and delightful treats.

A unique location
We arrived with high expectations, this 900‑year‑old castle is known for its grandeur and culinary excellence and we were excited to be shown upstairs, past authentic suits of armour, to the dining hall.
From the moment we stepped inside, the sense of place was impressive. The dining hall feels majestic with arched stone windows, red studded chairs and a splendid hearth where a crackling fire adds a welcoming glow. We had a window table with views out to the gardens and castle wall ruins.

Indulgent experience
Afternoon teaWe chose the Full Afternoon Tea, a refined selection of savouries, scones, and sweets. It began with a crisp glass of locally produced Nyetimber sparkling wine and elegant finger sandwiches and warm savoury pastries – rich, buttery parcels that set the tone for what was to become a steadily indulgent feast. The homemade fruit scones were my favourite. Fresh from the oven and kept warm under ribbed silver cloches, the scones were perfectly crumbly and served with traditional thick strawberry jam and clotted cream. Then came the cakes, each one a miniature work of art. Delicately crafted and picture-perfect, they were every bit as delightful as they looked. We were determined to try them all, but in the end, we simply couldn’t manage every last bite. Fortunately, our server, Bothie, kindly offered to package up the remaining cakes for us to take home.
The service throughout our visit was friendly, attentive when needed, yet never intrusive. Bothie clearly enjoyed his role, and his warm personality added a lovely touch to our afternoon. We shared a light‑hearted conversation with him – at one point joking that we were far too full to move and might need a room for the night. Sadly, he couldn’t grant that wish, but his good humour made the moment memorable.

Medieval architecture & English luxury

Lounge
Lounge

The castle’s public areas are open for guests to explore, and we enjoyed wandering through the lounges and imagining the many centuries of stories held within the stone walls. On warmer days, the terrace would be a beautiful alternative spot to linger and enjoy the surrounding gardens.
Overall, our afternoon tea at Amberley Castle was a beautiful blend of scrumptious food, historic atmosphere, and warm service. Whether you’re celebrating something meaningful or simply craving a peaceful escape in a standout setting, this experience is one to treasure. It’s a wonderful way to mark a special occasion with a special person.
