Nestled in the heart of the delightful town of Alfriston in East Sussex, The Alfriston Hotel and Spa offers a relaxed yet refined countryside escape just a few minutes’ walk from the charming centre, with its independent shops, galleries and traditional tea rooms. The setting feels quintessentially English. We were invited to visit the spa and enjoy lunch, and from the moment we arrived, the friendly welcome set the tone for the day. Staff were consistently warm, helpful and approachable, creating an atmosphere that felt both professional and genuinely relaxed.
Spa serenity with a view
The spa itself is an attractive and thoughtfully designed space, featuring a sauna and steam room alongside a large relaxation area with comfortable loungers overlooking the pool. Visiting during the May heatwave meant we could make the most of the outdoor facilities, and the pool quickly became a highlight. The pool is heated so can actually be used year-round for swimming. At the foothills of the South Downs, the peaceful setting encourages you to completely switch off, with the gentle hum of summer and uninterrupted countryside views enhancing the sense of escape.

A bright and welcoming dining space
After a leisurely spa session, we headed to the restaurant, where large windows frame views of the terrace and lawns, filling the space with natural light. There’s a lovely community feel here too, with the grounds open to the public for drinks on the terrace or even an ice cream on the lawn. The Alfriston have partnered with nearby vineyard Rathfinny as their preferred wine supplier, and the terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of world-class sparkling wine.We began with ‘nibbles’, which were generous in both portion and flavour. The squid pieces with alioli were tender with a light crispness, while the ‘popcorn’ cauliflower, coated in a sticky sweet glaze with spring onion and chilli, offered a moreish balance of sweetness and spice – pictured right.

Elegant, seasonal dishes
Starters continued to impress. The Spring Leaf & Beetroot Salad featured delicate cubes of beetroot scattered among fresh leaves and pomegranate, bringing both colour and freshness to the plate. I opted for the Cornish Crab Crumpets – moist crab paired with smooth avocado purée and a hint of tangy grapefruit, all served on soft, squidgy crumpets that absorbed the flavours beautifully. For mains, I chose the pan-fried cod, served with braised fennel that was soft, sweet and delicately infused with aniseed notes. Jeff selected the Wye salmon with puffed rice and pine nuts, adding texture to a perfectly cooked dish. Each plate was well balanced and thoughtfully presented.
A refreshing glass of non-alcoholic sparkling wine proved the ideal accompaniment on such a warm day.
Relaxed moments on the lawn
Service throughout lunch remained friendly and attentive, adding to the relaxed yet polished feel. Afterwards, we took coffee on the lawn beneath a large parasol, enjoying the peaceful surroundings before strolling into Alfriston along the riverbank, arriving via the village’s pretty church — a perfect end to the afternoon.
