A Grand Setting by the Sea: The Grand Hotel, Brighton

The Grand Hotel Brighton

Review by Editor Kris Thomas

Brighton’s seafront is home to many iconic buildings, but few are as instantly recognisable or steeped in history as The Grand Hotel. With its elegant Victorian façade and prime location overlooking the English Channel, The Grand has long been a symbol of seaside luxury. Opened in 1864, the hotel has hosted royalty, celebrities and countless visitors seeking a touch of glamour on the Sussex coast. Its architecture and grandeur remain a testament to Brighton’s rich heritage, and the hotel continues to evolve while retaining its timeless charm.

A new chapter in wellness

I was lucky enough to be invited to the official launch of The Grand’s new spa, a significant addition to the hotel’s offering. The spa has partnered with L.RAPHAEL Geneve, a pioneering Swiss skincare brand known for its science-led treatments and global presence in Geneva, New York and Jaffa. This marks L.RAPHAEL’s first foray into the UK, and the collaboration brings a new level of sophistication to Brighton’s wellness scene.

During my visit, I was treated to a bespoke facial featuring L.RAPHAEL’s signature LEC40 lipids and the intriguingly named botanical green caviar. The experience was deeply relaxing, and my skin felt soft, hydrated and was noticeably radiant well into the evening. The spa itself is beautifully designed, with a thermal suite, two hydrotherapy pools, and a relaxation area complete with heated water beds. It’s a tranquil haven that’s open to non-residents, making it a tempting option for locals looking to unwind. The hotel’s recently refurbished gym is also open to the public, offering a well-equipped space for fitness enthusiasts.

Staying in style

Junior Suite

My accommodation for the night was a junior suite, and it was nothing short of spectacular. The room was spacious and elegantly furnished, with a free-standing bath positioned by the window – perfect for soaking while gazing out at the sea. The balcony offered 180-degree coastal views, an ideal spot for morning coffee and watching the early runners pass by on the prom.

The suite combined classic elegance with modern comfort, and small touches like plush robes, high-quality toiletries and complimentary Brighton Gin (with tonic, an ice bucket and slices of lemon) made the stay feel truly special.

Dining with flair

Dinner was served in the Albert Room, a refined yet welcoming space. I started with grilled king prawns in garlic butter – a simple but flavourful dish. The main course was a standout: seafood linguini with lobster, chilli, garlic, lime and coriander. It was fresh, vibrant and beautifully balanced. Dessert was a tropical delight – a mango, lime and coconut pannacotta with a tangy passionfruit sauce that rounded off the meal perfectly.

The hotel’s bar and restaurants are open to the public, making them a great choice for a special evening out, even if you’re not staying overnight. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the atmosphere relaxed yet refined.

A local treasure

Whether you’re visiting Brighton or you live nearby, The Grand Hotel is well worth a visit. It’s more than just a place to stay – it’s a piece of the city’s history, a hub for fine dining and now, thanks to the new spa, a destination for world-class wellness. The combination of heritage and modern luxury makes it a unique venue that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.
