A Return to the Seafront: Rockwater Hove

Rockwater Hove East Sussex

Review by Editor Kris Thomas

On a warm and sunny Saturday in early September, I paid a visit to Rockwater in Hove. I used to come here as a child with my dad when it was known as The West End Café. I’d roller skate along the seafront with ‘Huggy’ the dog pulling me along. Returning some 40 years later, the site is transformed into a vibrant, contemporary hospitality and events venue right on Hove seafront.

A prime location with a rich history

Once a traditional seaside café, Rockwater has undergone several transformations in name and concept over the years. The West End Café existed as early as 1912 but become prominent from the 1930s to the late 1970s. In the 1980s, it was called “0273 Bar,” named after the Brighton area code. The early 1990s saw it become The Island, a nightclub that was destroyed by fire in 1995. Babylon Lounge nightclub and bar followed, then “The View.” Around 2010, it became “Venue” before the site was redeveloped around 2020 as Rockwater. The transformation included the addition of the Shacks by the Shore and a roof terrace.
The location is unbeatable—just steps from the promenade and pebble beach, with panoramic views of the sea. On the day of our visit, the area was buzzing with families, couples (and plenty of dogs) enjoying the late summer sunshine.

Comfortable surroundings

Inside, the venue is welcoming and well-appointed. We were lucky to be given a window seat—perfect for people-watching and soaking up the coastal atmosphere. From our vantage point, we saw swimmers, windsurfers, and sailing boats skimming the horizon. The service was excellent throughout, with Alex, a senior team member, looking after us attentively and professionally.

Food & drink: fresh, & delicious

Tuna at Rockwater Hove

Rockwater’s menu caters to a wide range of tastes, including vegetarian and plant-based options.
We started with two standout seafood starters: Me: classic Crayfish Cocktail (£13) – crisp Iceberg lettuce, tangy Marie Rose sauce, and toasted sourdough. For mum; South Coast Crab Salad (£14) – Spiced brown crab, with rich herb mayo, pickled fennel, and toast. For mains, as we couldn’t get much closer to the sea, we chose “Catch of the Day” local Skate, simply fried in caper butter, served with kale and tenderstem and seared Loin of Tuna (£27 – pictured below left) – Served pink with a zingy lentil salsa and rocket, a brilliant flavour combination.

Both main dishes were beautifully presented and expertly cooked, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients and the kitchen’s skill.
The drinks menu is equally impressive, with a wide selection of cocktails and mocktails. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic mojito or a non-alcoholic spritz, there’s something for everyone.

Rooftop views & relaxed vibes

After our meal, we headed upstairs to the rooftop terrace for coffee. Though we didn’t have room for dessert, the setting was ideal for winding down. Comfy armchairs and sleek glass screens, offering wind protection without compromising the view, make it a perfect sunset drinks spot. The uninterrupted views along the coast are truly spectacular at any time of day.
Events & community spirit
Rockwater isn’t just a place to eat and drink, it’s a community hub. Their events calendar offers a range of activities, from live music and comedy nights to craft workshops and supper clubs.

Coming up in October 2025:

Autumn CV & Coffee Morning – Thursday, October 2nd, 9:30–11am. A relaxed networking event for job seekers to connect over coffee.
Sip & Paint: creative evening of art and cocktails.
Wine & Cheese Club – A guided tasting experience

A New Chapter – The Pub at Rockwater

The Pub Rockwater Hove
The Pub Rockwater Hove

Adding to Rockwater’s evolving story is The Pub , a newly opened space that reimagines the traditional British pub with a coastal twist. Formerly known as The Lodge, this area has been thoughtfully redesigned to offer a warm, welcoming environment that blends classic pub culture with Rockwater’s signature style.

Whether you’re after a quiet pint by the fire, a lively game of pool or darts, or a relaxed Sunday roast with friends, The Pub delivers a familiar yet elevated experience. The menu features comforting British staples—think oven-baked pies, wood-fired pizzas, and expertly mixed cocktails—alongside freshly baked pastries and traditional roasts that make it a weekend favourite.

Entertainment is central to the atmosphere, with games tables and a wide selection of board games encouraging friendly competition and conversation. It’s a place where locals and visitors alike can unwind, connect, and enjoy the simple pleasures of good food, good company, and seaside charm.

As Luke Davis, Founder and CEO of Rockwater, puts it: “A pub isn’t just four walls and a bar, it’s where stories are shared, friendships grow, and everyone feels at home.”
From puppy yoga on the terrace to Friday night sessions, The Pub adds another layer to Rockwater’s community-focused offering—ensuring there’s truly something for everyone.
