Journey into the past
From the moment of arrival, time travellers are whisked back to absorb the sights, sounds and spectacle of the past. As the castle gates open, each medieval passport guides travellers on a journey to dramatic sieges in front of the ancient castle. The thrill of the joust calls and highly skilled fully armoured knights take to their steads. Over head birds swoop in dazzling displays of falconry to the sound of distant beating drums.
Beyond the castle lies Living History villages and soldier’s encampments. Villagers offer their mysterious travellers a friendly smile and a chance to see what day to day life in the Middle Ages was really like. The life of a peasant was not always pleasant! Demonstrations and have-a-go activities include axe throwing and archery or workshops in blacksmith-forging, chain mail, calligraphy, brass rubbing, arrow making, and many other traditional arts and crafts surround the castle walls.
The journey continues through the mystical woods to a clearing where children learn forest skills and fairies play. Explore further and you may discover the witches circle where folklore is told and spells are made. For regal travellers there are Princess and Warrior schools and the chance to meet a real Knight or falconer – perhaps even shake hands with King or Queen in the grand parade! Younger travellers delight in Kids Kingdom with wizards and jesters entertaining, traditional games played, and fascinating tales of old told.
Time travellers with weekend passports or those indulging in the Royal Banquet gain access to an array of excellent evening entertainment. Campers, Glampers and B&B guests can join a torchlit procession following drum groups Stix and The Pentacle Drummers to dazzling fire shows, star gazing or even the ‘Feast of Fools’. The moonlit cinema shows medieval themed classics to weary travellers while the lively Tavern entertains those with a little more energy.
