Hastings Fishing Families is a photographic portrayal which has been in existence for over a thousand years from the 1990s to the present day of the men and women of Britain’s oldest beach-launched fishing community.
Realised by John Cole, the book portrays a unique community that may soon become extinct. Generations is in the tradition of such classic photojournalists as Sebastiao Salgado, Don McCullin and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Cole’s images document the passing of a way of working, of skills that have been handed down from generation to generation. Helps make a concrete contribution to helping the Hastings fishing industry through a donation to the Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society.
John Cole has worked as a photojournalist for the Sunday Times, the Observer, the Independent, as well as for leading design and advertising agencies. John’s true passion is photographing ordinary people doing extraordinary things, giving voice to those who may not have a voice of their own, such as the men and women of the Hastings fishing community.
