Independent charity Victim Support is currently recruiting new volunteers across Sussex to help provide practical and emotional support to those affected by crime.

Victim Support in Sussex are currently seeking volunteers who can offer three hours per week or more to support victims of a variety of crimes such as burglary, hate crime and anti-social behaviour.

Maralyn Smith, Contract Manager for Sussex at independent charity Victim Support in said: “Our volunteers are an integral part of our team. They all receive specialist training to enable them to support those affected by crime to begin to rebuild their lives.

“This is a very varied role as our services are always led by our clients and what they need to help them through this difficult time. This can range from regular meetings offering emotional support through to helping with practical matters such as liaising with the police, supporting someone through the criminal justice system or ensuring they feel safe by providing better home security or personal alarms.

“Crime can have a devastating impact and the fallout can be stressful and overwhelming. We know from speaking to thousands of victims of crime every year that it can be difficult to talk about what’s happened or to ask for help and our volunteers are a real lifeline for people, when they need it most.”

Victim Support works across England and Wales to offer free and confidential support to victims of all crimes, whether or not the incident has been reported to the police.

David Merrington, Victim Support Volunteer said:  “I find volunteering with Victim Support very rewarding. I’m able to take on as many or as few cases as I can and the training is excellent grounding for the work you do. It’s a pleasure to meet colleague volunteers from time to time, like me, who are motivated to do this work because we want to rather than because we have to.”
