The scheme design has been completed following a second public information event in March 2019. However, due to a review of schemes set to be delivered this financial year (2019/20), the A23 Brighton Road Hooley improvement has been delayed.
This means we will no longer look to start construction of the A23 Brighton Road Hooley improvement in this financial year. The earliest we will look to start this scheme is now April 2020. We will make a further decision as to whether the scheme will proceed in January 2020.
If the scheme is taken forward, residents will be contacted further with specific construction dates.
The A23 Brighton Road through Hooley is a strategic route between Brighton and London, and is a key route for motorists travelling to and from Gatwick Airport.
The proposed scheme will ease congestion, improve safety and provide better links for pedestrians and cyclists. It aims to reduce accident rates, reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and to improve provision for cyclists and pedestrians.
Proposed improvements include reduction in speed limit from 40mph to 30mph through residential area upgrade and synchronise the existing traffic signal timings through the crossroads of the A23 with Netherne Drive and Star Lane new shared footway/cycleway along the A23 widen the A23 northbound to two lanes from Church Lane to Netherne Drive widen the A23 southbound to two lanes from Netherne Drive to the Esso garage.
