It has been a notable time for women’s equality
Tuesday 6th February marked the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act 1918 which allowed some women, and all men, to vote for the first time and paved the way for universal suffrage 10 years later. This was the first in a series of hard-fought milestones in the struggle for women’s rights.
The Sussex Police office was able to support International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This is a heinous crime against women and young girls, with over 200 million of them having been cut in 30 countries. Katy Bourne, Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner has met several strong and passionate female campaigners who have been victims of this harmful practice.
Safer Internet Day
This week saw another national campaign but one which was not solely aimed at just women and girls, in the form of Safer Internet Day. Digital information has transformed and shaped our lives in an incredibly short timespan. It is now no longer realistic to think of the real world and the virtual world as separate places; they have become inextricably entwined. Almost everybody with access to a smartphone, tablet or PC has a digital identity and almost every transaction leaves a digital footprint. But far too often we hear of the darker side connected to the growth in digital technology, like on-line grooming, trolling, radicalisation and fraud.
Katy Bourne said: “As PCC national lead for Police Technology and Digital and Chair of The Police ICT Company, I will continue to support the police to protect our citizens and our businesses. I have recently met with other PCCs, police chiefs, academics and businesses and it is very clear that much more can be achieved by working together to take a fresh look at the crime and social challenges of the digital age.”
