Volunteers are being thanked for their part in a successful weekend beach clean at Selsey’s East Beach. The clean-up and survey took place on Saturday 21st September during the Marine Conservation Society’s annual Great British Beach Clean, and was organised by Chichester District Council as part of its Selsey Bathing Water Enhancement Project, which is delivered in partnership with Southern Water.
Almost 50 volunteers took part in the beach clean. They surveyed over 2km of beaches and collected 17 bags of rubbish, weighing over 30kg. Data from this survey will be collated and submitted to the Marine Conservation Society for analysis. The results will highlight any changes in the litter collected from previous years and will be used to help inform future awareness-raising and educational initiatives.
“This was a fantastic community event and I was delighted to be a part of it,” says Councillor Penny Plant, Cabinet Member for Environment and Chichester Contract Services. “It’s so important that we take care of our beaches, especially after the busy bathing season, and we are very grateful to all of the volunteers who came out to help us protect our local environment and wildlife. Their time, energy, and effort, made this event a real success.

After the two-hour beach clean, the Selsey & District Lions put on a barbecue for all the volunteers, with meat kindly supplied by Selsey butcher, Francis & Sons Family Butchers.
