Footbridge project along A27 reaches halfway point

National Highways’ new footbridge over the River Cuckmere along the A27 has been installed.

The footbridge, which weighs 38 tonnes and spans 35.8m, was delivered in one piece and completes another section of the new, multi-use pathway from Firle to Polegate. Everything for the bridge was prefabricated in Kent and transported under escort to the A27 via the M25 and M23.

Although the bridge cannot be used just yet, National Highways reached the halfway point in the project and expect to open it soon.

Upcoming road closures

  • A pipe will be laid across Bopeep Lane overnight between 8pm and 6am from Monday 15th August to Saturday 20th August 2022. This is to prevent risk of flooding and take rainwater away from the road.
  • Temporary traffic lights may affect journies between Polegate and Firle whilst overnight works are carried out on weekdays from Monday 15th to Friday 23rd September 2022.
