New Family Group ‘Sunflowers’ to support children with special needs

We all recognise the classic sunflower plant; bright, cheerful and hardy. The sunflower stands out proud in the field, garden or vase. Home-Start have just named their newest Family Group Sunflowers! Why?

Home-Start has responded to Adur families requiring a supportive environment for their children with special needs to come together, play, have fun and share information. The unique characteristic of the new group is that young children do not have to have a formal diagnosis to attend. Children with additional
needs are welcome and can experience a range of play opportunities with their parent or young siblings.

Children will be able to play with other young children in a safe space, with a range of activities each week. Parents will benefit from peer support as well as the opportunity to use a listening ear with Home-Start staff and volunteers to offer support and guidance. The Sunflowers Group is being held on Mondays mornings from 10-11.30am during term-time at Kingston Buci Children and Family Centre which is fully accessible.

Linda Sherwood, Organiser says; “The sunflower needs nurturing and so do our young children with additional needs. There are many varieties of sunflower – as there are special needs. The sunflowers need shielding from the elements, delicate planting and be allowed to grow strong roots. We feel the same about our children and this group can help parents to nurture their children and enjoy social interaction. There are many different challenges
for these children and we hope to make the Sunflowers Group a time in the week that they look forward to.”

Thanks to Adur Community Initiatives Fund and WSCC Children’s Early Years Services this group is free to Adur families to attend. If you are interested in attending and would like to know more please call the office on 01903 889707. Please call Home-Start before attending the first session as numbers are limited.

Bridget Richardson, Home-Start Manager said; “We love the many varieties of sunflowers and we see the children we support as individuals even when they are little. We hope to grow some Teddy Bear sunflowers next year and some very happy children and well informed parents this year!”

If you would like to support the charity, you can donate, hold an event or volunteer and join the energetic team. Call the office on 01903 889707 or go online to find out more.
