A brand new comedy competition is due to launch next year as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019.
The Sussex Comedian of the Year, organised by comedy experts Barnstormers and talent agency Andromeda Talent, will be making its debut thanks to a grant from the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 fund and sponsorship from district based business, Freeman Brothers Funeral Directors.
The Year of Culture grants panel, made up of culture and arts representatives, were highly impressed by the plans for the comedy competition, which is set to include heats across the district and a cash prize for the winner – as well as a slot during Barnstormers Comedy’ annual extravaganza at The Capitol, Horsham.
Horsham District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen said:
“I am really pleased to be announcing this creation of a completely new type of event and experience as part of our Year of Culture celebrations, especially as it looks set to become a regular biannual event.
“Bringing new local talent to light is what the Year of Culture is all about and we look forward to celebrating and enjoying this new competition.”
Becky Hughes, Freeman Brothers’ Community Co-Ordinator, whose role involves identifying community partnership opportunities such as this, could see the potential in sponsoring the competition.
“This is a unique and exciting opportunity for Freeman Brothers, and something we’ve never done before, proving that there are new experiences to be had even when your business has been running for over 160 years!
“It’s great to support an event which will have a reach throughout the district, and we hope that this will be the beginning of a successful future for the competition.”
Kevin Precious, Barnstormers Comedy’s founder, promoter and compere in-chief, said:
“It’s a great privilege to be providing a platform for the Sussex Comedian of the Year competition and to be part of the Year of Culture. We’ve been hosting shows in Horsham for 15 years, and have a lovely longstanding connection to both the people and the area.’”
Further information on how to apply to take part in the competition, as well as heat dates will be available on the Year of Culture website soon, as well as via the Barnstormers Comedy website www.barnstormerscomedy.com in due course.
