Hundreds walk across the South Downs to raise £1000’s for charity

The 2018 Just Walk event took place on Saturday 12th May with over 1,100 walkers from across the country, starting at Goodwood Racecourse in Chichester, West Sussex with many taking on the BIG 60km route (37 miles) to raise money for worthwhile causes.

Due to the uniqueness of this one-day walking challenge, walkers simply chose a walking distance to suit their fitness level or goal – 10km, 25km, 35km, 45km or the BIG 60km, pay their event fee and then every penny raised goes directly to the charity of their choosing. One of the great things about this event is the fact that anyone can take part, there really is something for everyone, no matter their age or fitness level.

One such intrepid group of walkers were this lovely group of boys, all 11 years of age from Southampton, who took on the 10km route and completed it in a fantastic 2.5 hours. They have raised an amazing £3,000 between them for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

While many took on the challenge to raise money for a worthy cause close to their hearts, there were also many people walking in memory of a loved one, who are sadly no longer with us. One Just Walker told us “It’s a really lovely way to get outside as a family, enjoy the stunning countryside across the South Downs, spend time together and reminisce. Our aunty loved walking, so we felt this was an appropriate way to honour her memory.”

The rain held out for most of the morning and early afternoon, unfortunately the walkers on the 35km, 45km and the BIG 60km route bore the brunt of the rain with many crossing the finishing line very muddy and wet, yet still with a massive smile across their faces as they were handed their medals of accomplishment and a glass of bubbly to celebrate.

Mark Hannaford, Founder of Just Walk said “We are very proud of our participants who have raised this vast amount of money for so many great charities and causes over the past 12 Just Walk events. This is what sets our event apart from the rest; our walkers can raise funds for ANY charity of their choice and once the entry fees are paid, ALL money goes to their charity.”

Mark continues “This year was our largest yet; we are seeing a consistent 9/10% increase in our Just Walkers year on year. The amount of money raised by our Just Walkers for 2018 is also expected to be the largest amount of money raised to date, we had walkers representing 162 charities and worthy causes and they are still seeing donations coming in.”
