Stopgap Dance Company and local dancers are presenting an evening of dance and film at The Capitol in Horsham on Tuesday 16th July.
The evening of work is the result of a year-long project made possible by Sussex Arts Academy’s success in an Arts Council England funding application to commission Chris Pavia, a senior artist with learning disabilities from Stopgap Dance Company, to create an inclusive dance with disabled and non-disabled young people in Horsham.
Dancers taking part include students from The College of Richard Collyer (Collyer’s) and members of The Butterfly Project, an organisation that creates opportunities and training for people with disabilities. Their progress is being captured by film-maker Floyd Konde, who will produce a short documentary also to be screened as part of the performance event.
“A Space in Gravity”
On July 16th 2019, as part of an evening of dance and film entitled ‘A Space in Gravity’, the piece will be performed at The Capitol Theatre for the Horsham Year of Culture – a diverse and inclusive arts festival that provides a platform for creativity, bringing artists and audiences together in Horsham Town and District. The live performance will be followed by a screening of Stopgap’s film work ‘Artificial Things’, directed by Sophie Fiennes.
During this evening, audiences will also have the opportunity to watch a preview of Chris Pavia’s new duet ‘The Journey Between’ funded through Arts Council England and Unlimited, featuring dancers Nadenh Poan and Christian Brinklow. The themes of this production have been the springboard for Chris’ work with the local dancers.
Chris commented on work with the students, which is ongoing:
“I’m looking forward to seeing it all come together. I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved in choreography and for me I’m just super honoured and proud to have a good piece”.
David Sword, from Sussex Arts Academy, added: “We’re delighted to support the commissioning of this piece, which demonstrates the positive impact of inclusivity in the arts”.
