Calm, warm sea, glorious sunshine and smooth organisation all contributed to an incredible weekend on Hove Lawns for the 4th Brighton and Hove Triathlon.
Organisers say it has been their most successful yet with over 1600 competitors competing over the course of the weekend in Scootathlon, Children’s Triathlon, Adults Triathlon and the British qualifying event for both next year’s World Championships and European Championships.
Saturday kicked off with the children’s Scoot with over 100 children competing. The level of competitiveness was startling for children so young proving that if you offer children an opportunity to race, they will jump at the chance.
The youngest was 3 and the eldest 8. They Scooted, biked and ran along Hove Promenade proud to wear their new orange Scootathlon t-shirts.
All triathlon competitors arrived throughout the day to register and rack their bikes. As the event village was open it gave the competitors a chance to familiarise themselves with the transition area, rack their bikes and lay out all their equipment for Sunday’s race and sample some of the food and drink on offer in the event village. The weather was glorious so people were in really good spirits and looking forward to Sunday’s race.
As the sun rose on Sunday morning the sea was like glass so the competitors were really relaxed about the sea swim section. The Kid’s Triathlon started at 8am with the 8 year olds and after watching them set such an incredible example, the adults were fired up and ready to go.
Event OrganiserJohn Lunt said. “We couldn’t be happier. Everything has gone according to plan. We have had a huge turn out and all the comments I have received have been so positive. Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club provided over 25 lifeguards to cover the sea swim today and we are extremely grateful to them. John continued,,
“It is extremely encouraging when people come up to me to say it is their first triathlon and they have had such a great experience they will be back again next year. Building on the success in 2019, we hope to have in excess of 2,000 participants next year.”
Over the course of the day, athletes competed in the Super Sprint, the Sprint and Olympic Distances. With temperatures reaching 22 degrees it was perfect conditions for racing.
