Grafton Car Park Hosts free outdoor circus show

A host of angels are coming to earth in Worthing, they have been dropping their wings so they can float down. All over the town you will find signs of their presence, they have been watching us from above, silently, invisibly, guarding and caring for us. Now they wish to come down and meet us.

A unique experience for circus-lovers will be flying into town this summer, as a newly commissioned piece of work created by the Kate Lawrence Vertical Dance company will take place at Grafton Car Park on Saturday 12 August, at 12.30pm and 3pm.

Inspired by Wim Wender’s 1987 film Wings of Desire, ‘Host’ is a new creation for Circomedia students that has been choreographed by Kate Lawrence as part of Worthing Theatres Summer of Circus.

Vertical dance is an exciting, emerging form of dance that typically uses rock climbing equipment to suspend dancers off the ground on a range of vertical surfaces.  It takes place in a variety of locations, from theatres and their foyers to the outside of buildings and rock faces. Vertical Dance Kate Lawrence (VDKL) are one of a limited, but growing number of companies worldwide specialising in this new dance genre.  Artistic Director, Kate Lawrence has over 30 years of experience as a dance artist and 15 years specialising in Vertical Dance. The company was constituted in December 2014 for the promotion of arts activities and builds on Kate’s collaboration with rigger Simon Edwards.

As part of the project, there will be several temporary art installations spray-painted onto walls throughout Worthing town centre, with the locations to be confirmed shortly. The artwork will depict angel’s wings and are being produced by local artist Will Blood using non-corrosive and non-toxic spray, and will make fun photo opportunities for local residents and tourists.

Amanda O Reilly, Head of Culture for Adur & Worthing Councils says “This is the first performance Worthing Theatres has commissioned and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Circomedia to develop a visually stunning piece with Vertical Dance. ‘Host’ is a site specific performance using Grafton Car Park so get along to the seafront and make sure you keep looking up and don’t miss this exceptional part of our Summer of Circus

‘Host’ is a free non-ticketed outdoor event and spectators will be asked to stand on the Worthing promenade opposite Grafton Car Park to enjoy the experience. For more information visit
