Fire Service joins up with The Prince’s Trust to deliver new taster sessions

Fire service

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is looking for the next generation of fitness fanatics as part of a new education programme delivered in partnership with The Prince’s Trust.

The service is preparing to deliver its very first virtual Get Started with Health and Fitness programme,  aimed at 16-25-year-old young people who are not in employment, training or education.

The online sessions will take place between Wednesday 19 April and Sunday 23 April. The service will also be hosting a taster session on Thursday 13 April between 10am and 12pm.

The course has been designed to help participants:

  • Build emotional resilience
  • Gain confidence
  • Develop skills and knowledge in independent working, self-care, problem solving and healthy living.
  • Gain experience and understanding in health and fitness.

The virtual sessions will consist of physical activity and recovery sessions, nutrition and self-care including mental health.

Upon completion of the course, all young people will then be offered an opportunity to go onto a Princes Trust programme called TEAMS, a 12 week course run by Brighton Met College in Worthing.

Chief Fire Officer, Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to have a go at something a little bit different and consider whether a career in health and fitness is for them. The sessions will give young people the opportunity to work together as a team while also learning valuable life skills, with the opportunity to progress further if they find that they really enjoy this area of work.

“Many people have been re-evaluating their options during lockdown, and I would urge young people to give this opportunity some serious thought as it could lead onto something really quite special.”
