Bushy Wood, a 17-acre woodland site used by Scouts, Guides and other youth groups, had been battling deteriorating access for years. Temporary hardcore and road planings repeatedly washed away, leaving the car park uneven and difficult to navigate, particularly for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility. This spring, Roadways rebuilt and reinforced the car park using Trackform, a cement-bound recycled aggregate the company produces at its own local Hailsham depot. The material is designed for long-term durability without ongoing maintenance.

Mark, Centre Manager at Bushy Wood thanked Roadways for its support: “Our sincere thanks go to Roadways for their outstanding expertise in surfacing our car park. Thanks to their excellent work, our guests can now park safely and enjoy our facilities with peace of mind.”

The highways company also donated four Brighton & Hove Albion hospitality tickets as a raffle prize to support the centre’s fundraising for a 2027 international trip to the Kandersteg Scout Centre in Switzerland. The raffle raised £1,436.

The Bushy Wood project is one of many carried out in the community by Roadways each month. At the Heathfield Agricultural Show, the company installed Trackform at the cattle wash area. “We are always so grateful to local businesses who continue to assist us with ‘in kind’ sponsorship,” said Tracey Hobden, Show Coordinator.

At the BIG Futures Show in Eastbourne – East Sussex’s largest careers event for students with special education needs and disabilities – Roadways ran interactive stands letting attendees handle recycled aggregate samples, explore road construction techniques, and use CAD software to connect gaming skills with construction careers.

The company also provided traffic management for the Hailsham Community Run, delivered career days at Hailsham Community College, and made donations to food banks, veterans’ causes and homeless support charities.

RSPCA Brighton urges thorough research before adopting a snake

This World Snake Day (16 July), the RSPCA is shining a spotlight on snakes in its care who are searching for loving homes, while reminding would-be owners that these fascinating reptiles require experienced, knowledgeable carers. It comes as the charity reveals it received more than four reports per day about snake welfare in 2025 – the highest number in at least five years.

Reptile rescue – From corn snakes and royal pythons, to boa constrictors and Taiwanese beauty snakes, a number of snakes are currently being cared for at RSPCA Brighton Reptile Rescue, while they wait for their forever homes. The charity says that these remarkable reptiles need knowledgeable owners who are committed to understanding and meeting their specific welfare needs – but that for those in a position to adopt, “rescue is always best”. Snakes require carefully controlled environments, including specialist heating and lighting, appropriate diets and spacious enclosures that allow them to carry out natural behaviours. Many species of snakes can live for 20 years or more, making them a significant long-term commitment.

The appeal comes after new RSPCA figures revealed the charity received 1,485 reports involving snakes in 2025 – the highest annual total recorded in any of the last five years. Many of the snakes that come into the charity’s care have been abandoned or signed over to the charity after owners underestimated the specialist care they need. The charity’s appeal also comes as its Cruelty Hurts, Love Rescues campaign highlights the increased pressure on the charity’s frontline teams during the warmer months, when reports of animal cruelty typically peak and more vulnerable animals come into the charity’s care.

Provide a home – Now, the RSPCA is encouraging anyone considering adopting a snake or other reptile to carefully research their needs and ensure they can provide the right environment for them before taking one on. Evie Button, RSPCA Senior Scientific Officer, said: “Exotic pets such as snakes often end up in the RSPCA’s care after people realise they’re not easy to care for, or the novelty wears off. “Pet snakes are completely dependent on their owners to provide the right accommodation, heating, lighting and diet, all of which needs to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible to keep them healthy and allow them to express their natural behaviours. “We’d urge anyone thinking about getting a snake to thoroughly research the needs of the particular species they are interested in, because the conditions in their enclosure needs to mimic the conditions of their natural habitat. “But for those who are able to provide specialist and appropriate care for a snake throughout their life, these reptiles can make fascinating and rewarding companions.”

Jenny Eden, Branch Manager at RSPCA Brighton, said: “Every one of these snakes has their own personality and we’d love to see them in loving forever homes with people who understand exactly what they need.“We spend time getting to know each snake and helping potential adopters understand the specialist care they’ll require, so they can go on to enjoy happy, healthy lives in their new homes”.

Ratsnake Ratt -Ratsnake Rattata has been waiting more than 800 days for a home, but staff say he still has the curiosity and energy of a much younger snake. He is hoping to finally find a forever home where he can settle in and thrive.ata

Jack the Python – Jack, a python, has been with the centre for more than18 months and staff say he is a calm, easy-to-handle snake who loves his food. They hope this laid-back snake will soon find his perfect match.

Maybeline the taiwanese beauty snake – Taiwanese beauty snake Maybeline has been waiting over 200 days for a home of her own. She is looking for a spacious enclosure of at least 6ft x 2ft x 2ft – although, the bigger the better!

Organisations are being invited to put forward deliverable projects for a site at Brooklands Park, as part of ambitious plans to further enhance one of Worthing’s most popular green spaces.

Worthing Borough Council has launched an expressions of interest process for a site within the park, seeking proposals that could build on its ongoing revitalisation while supporting nature, leisure and wellbeing.

Following feedback from the community, the size of the site being offered has been reduced. Located to the south-west of the park, it offers the potential for a range of imaginative uses that could strengthen Brooklands Park as a vibrant destination for residents and visitors.

In recent years, the park has undergone a significant transformation through a multimillion-pound investment programme focused on restoring the landscape, improving accessibility and enhancing biodiversity. This has included the opening of Brooklands Café, which has quickly become a popular community hub overlooking the revitalised lake.

Any proposals received will be assessed on their potential long-term benefits to the community, their environmental impact and how well they complement the park’s character and setting. Opening the site to expressions of interest does not commit the council to progressing any proposal, but it does open the opportunity for organisations to deliver a non-residential offer that will be appealing for residents and visitors.

The opportunity follows engagement with local stakeholders, businesses and organisations, who encouraged the council to open up suitable sites for external investment and fresh ideas to benefit the town. The council will also be inviting expressions of interest for the West Buildings Shelter site on Worthing promenade later this month.

Importantly, this opportunity aims to attract organisations to invest in, and provide, new activities that could broaden and diversify the town’s leisure offer, while ensuring any future proposals reflect local priorities.

Councillor Caroline Baxter, the leader of Worthing Borough Council, said: “Brooklands Park is one of Worthing’s most loved green spaces, and I’m excited to see what ideas organisations bring forward to make it even better for residents and visitors.

“We’ve listened to the community and reduced the size of the site we’re making available. This is a chance to explore new ideas that could enhance the park while respecting everything people already love about it.

“This is about seeing what’s possible. No decisions have been made and any future decisions will depend on the quality of the proposals we receive.”

The first round for expression of interest is now open, with submissions invited until 5pm on Sunday 16th August 2026. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to develop their proposals in greater detail during the second stage of the process.

A preferred proposal may be identified later this year, subject to the outcome of the process and any subsequent decisions. Any final scheme will be subject to full planning approval.

Her Majesty has strong links to both the college and the local area and is Patron of the Plumpton College Charitable Foundation and WineGB.

Continued contribution to English & Welsh wine

The Queen was welcomed to Plumpton College by Principal & CEO, Jeremy Kerswell, and Chair of Governors, Julie Dougill, before walking through the college’s 800-hectare estate and campus, meeting staff and students. During the visit, Her Majesty toured the Animal Education Centre with students, including the new lemur enclosure, before visiting the Veterinary Studies Centre. Opened in 2023, the centre includes commercial training facilities such as a canine hydrotherapy pool, giving students experience in a real working environment.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to update Her Majesty on the college’s continued contribution to the English and Welsh wine sector during its centenary year. The Queen met viticulture degree students at the AgriFood centre to hear about the recently planted industry leading Digital Centenary Vineyard. Plumpton College was proud to receive a national honour, the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, from Her Majesty in 2023 in recognition of its impact on the sector. Her Majesty also met apprentices from the recently launched School of Bakery, providing the next generation of bakers into production and commercial bakery settings.

100 years at the South Downs campus

Her Majesty concluded the visit by unveiling a plaque outside the AgriFood Centre to commemorate 100 years of land and environment education at the South Downs campus.

Jeremy Kerswell, Principal of Plumpton College, said: “It’s a huge honour to welcome Her Majesty to Plumpton College during this special year for the college. It was a privilege to share our centenary celebrations, showcase the £40m investment we have made in our campus over the past decade for sector leading technical resources, and give students the opportunity to speak directly about their learning and ambitions. Plumpton College continues to grow as more students choose to study with us and prepare for careers in the land and environment sector, where new entrants are in demand more than ever before. We are especially grateful for Her Majesty’s support for the Plumpton College Charitable Foundation, which helps ensure that more students can access education and training in these vital industries.

Our purpose remains as strong today as it was 100 years ago: to support the future of food, our land and the environment, and to equip students with the skills they need for a changing world.”

Horsham District Council and The Friends of Horsham Park are celebrating today after receiving a Green Flag Award for Horsham Park. It comes as the internationally recognised standard for parks and green spaces celebrates its 30th year.

Caring for green spaces

Horsham Park is a fantastic testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of the people who care for this green space, ensuring it is maintained to a high standard for all to enjoy.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Tony Frankland said: “We are extremely happy and proud to have been recognised through this prestigious award. Horsham Park is a jewel in the crown for Horsham District. It is enjoyed by so many people of all ages, all year-round for sports, community and play activities. It is a favourite meeting point for friends and family where they can all enjoy being in a natural green space that is so good for people’s wellbeing. My thanks go out to our officers, the Friends of Horsham Park and our many volunteers, partners and contractors for all the hard work they put in planning, developing and maintaining the park to achieve these standards. Congratulations to all involved.”

Improving experiences

The award comes in a year which saw the Council successfully complete several key projects to further improve experiences for visitors of all ages and abilities.

These include:

Protection of the veteran Oak tree with the installation of fencing and a new path around it

Re-routing of the path from the pond to Collyer’s College creating a more open route

Installed new sensory play equipment and planting in the children’s play area

Re-vitalised the surfacing in Park House Gardens improving accessibility for users of wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs. Additionally, the pillars originally from St Mary’s Churchyard have been topped to match the new paths, providing additional seating in the area.

“A great community space”

Chair of The Friends of Horsham Park Sally Sanderson added: “We are thrilled that Horsham Park has once again received the Green Flag. It recognises the huge effort put into making Horsham Park such a great community space. Last year the Friends contributed over 2500 hours of gardening, conservation and litter picking. The enthusiasm of our volunteers is a key ingredient in making the partnership with the Parks and Countryside team so effective. There are many other volunteers also showing their love for the park. This year the award is particularly sweet as the Park now has Fields In Trust status meaning it is protected for recreation in perpetuity.”

Double Paralympic champion and English Channel trailblazer Melanie Barratt is joining University of Brighton researchers, British Blind Sport and SwimTrek to support a new project helping blind and partially sighted people gain confidence in the sea.

The project

Gateway to the Sea is a new sea swimming initiative taking place on Saturday 27 June in Brighton, designed to help blind and partially sighted people build confidence in open water through supported coaching, guided swims and shared learning. Led by the University of Brighton in partnership with British Blind Sport – the UK’s national disability sport organisation for blind and partially sighted people – and open water swimming specialists SwimTrek, the initiative is also supported by Melanie Barratt – a double Paralympic champion, six-time World Champion, World Triathlon Champion and the first blind woman to swim the English Channel.

Using Sea Lanes Brighton as a base, participants will spend time both in the centre’s facilities and in the sea itself, supported by SwimTrek’s coaches and swim guides and experienced open water swimmers. The initiative builds directly on University of Brighton research led by PhD researcher Sadie Rockliffe, which examines the opportunities and barriers blind and partially sighted people encounter when accessing blue spaces such as seas, rivers and lakes. Organisers hope Gateway to the Sea will provide a model that can be developed in other locations around the UK, creating lasting opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to access blue spaces safely, confidently and enjoyably. While open water swimming continues to grow in popularity across the UK, many people with sight loss face significant barriers to participation.

The initiative has been designed to address these challenges through a fully supported day of coaching, guided swimming and shared learning, helping participants experience the sea in a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment.

The programme includes pool-based coaching, a guided sea swim supported by qualified coaches and one-to-one swim guides, opportunities for discussion and reflection, and a talk from Melanie Barratt about her own journey in swimming and open water.

Melanie Barratt said: “I have always loved the feeling of freedom being in the water gives me and have always loved to swim. After I retired from competitive swimming I always swam for relaxation and the joy it brings. I remember longing to swim in open water, and to swim from place to place, even country to country – but I thought it would be impossible.

“However, the open water swimming community is incredibly welcoming and inclusive and I was supported and helped into the water – and I was hooked! The feeling of literally being immersed in nature; the sounds, smells, colours and sensations were just like nothing else. I fell in love with the personal challenge it gave me and one thing led to another…

“Being blind or visually impaired can be so incredibly isolating, sometimes it’s difficult just leaving the house. But since joining a local open water swimming group I have made some incredible friends and developed a confidence in what I can do that has spilled over into all areas of my life. I know how hard it was to take those first initial steps into the water, so I am so excited to be able to offer this opportunity to others!”

By creating opportunities for people with sight loss to access the sea safely and confidently, the project aims to contribute to a wider conversation about inclusion, wellbeing and who gets to enjoy the benefits of the natural environment.

East Grinstead resident George Southgate will be leading a group of cyclists on a 600-mile journey from Berlin to London to support cancer patients and those who’ve lost loved ones to the disease. After his dad died of bowel cancer, he is turning the pedals to raise vital funds for The Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR) – the world-leading research institute and charity.

Insurance Underwriter, George, 28, is taking on the challenge in memory of his dad, Mike, who died in January 2022, aged 59. Mike was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in April 2020. He had treatment for almost two years and tackled his cancer head on, maintaining positivity, optimism and humour throughout.

His selfless attitude towards life and others has inspired George to complete an extraordinary fundraising challenge to keep his legacy alive. George says: “In the final stages of my dad’s illness and after trying a variety of harsh treatments, he wanted to take part in a clinical trial. He knew there was little chance it would improve his own prognosis but instead could help clinicians gain greater understanding into bowel cancer and the specific mutations present during his illness. Unfortunately, he was too ill to participate in it, but his attitude towards furthering research and the belief that this could improve the outlook for many bowel cancer patients is what has driven me to support The Institute of Cancer Research.”

George’s Goal

George is no stranger to a challenge. In June 2022, he raised more than £18,000 to support the ICR’s research when he, along with three others, cycled from London to Paris in memory of his dad. He’s now preparing to get back on his bike to raise even more. This time, from 5 to 10 July, he will be cycling from Berlin to London, through Germany and across the Netherlands, then travelling by ferry to the UK before finishing his journey outside the ICR’s labs in Chelsea. Passing through rural countryside, small towns and villages, he plans to travel about 100 miles a day.

George has recruited 26 adventurers to join him on his expedition, including many of his colleagues from the insurance industry to honour Mike’s 40-year career in this sector. George’s cousin Ben, who lost his mother to breast cancer in 2023, will also be taking part in the cycle ride. The family knows only too well the devastation caused by cancer. George’s grandfather died in 2018 after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and his uncle died aged 47 from osteosarcoma.

Many of those taking part in George’s ride are not experienced cyclists – just people who are prepared to take on some significant training. His intention is to bring together cyclists and non-cyclists in an exciting but difficult challenge, creating a chance for those who have been affected by cancer in some way to come together and make a positive difference.

As he pedals the route, there is no doubt that his dad will be at the forefront of George’s mind, inspiring him to keep going and pushing forward to the finish line.

“When my dad was diagnosed with cancer, the outlook was devastating from the start – he was told he had only weeks to live. Nevertheless, through treatment, along with determination and undoubtedly some luck, he went on to live for almost two more years. In hindsight, this alone is testament to the man he was, and his ability to withstand an overwhelmingly difficult situation, all while continuing to remain his positive, warm and loving self, optimistic that he would beat the cancer. Despite knowing he had an incurable diagnosis, his death at just 59 was a major shock, and it is still very difficult to come to terms with.

George hopes to raise over £100,000 to support the ICR’s pioneering work. The charity’s current fundraising appeal focuses on driving forward new research to make bowel cancer more preventable, predictable and treatable: Help give everyone with bowel cancer the hope of a cure

Dogs Trust Shoreham warns about scorching pavements and calls for owners to avoid walks during hot weather

As a rare red heat warning is issued in parts of the country this week with rising temperatures across the UK, Dogs Trust Shoreham is urging owners to think carefully about when to walk their dogs, warning that hot pavements and warm conditions can quickly put dogs at risk.

Risks for dogs

While many owners look forward to dog walks on sunny days, Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is reminding people that pavements and parks can become dangerously hot, and exercise increases the risk of heat-related illness such as heat stroke.

Unlike humans, dogs can’t regulate their body temperature by sweating and rely mainly on panting to cool themselves down. This means that walking, playing or spending time in hot areas can quickly become uncomfortable and dangerous.

Pavements and roads absorb heat throughout the day and can become hot enough to burn a dog’s paw pads. Dogs Trust is encouraging owners to avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day and instead choose cooler periods, such as early morning or late evening. On particularly hot days, it is safer to skip walks altogether and provide alternative forms of enrichment at home.

Emily Mills, Veterinary Projects Manager at Dogs Trust, said: “Many owners enjoy getting outside with their dogs when the sun comes out, but warm weather can pose serious risks. Dogs are much more vulnerable to heat than people, and can quickly become uncomfortable or develop heat-related illness, especially if they’re exercised during the hottest parts of the day. Hot pavements can also cause painful burns to dogs’ paw pads. If the ground feels too hot for the back of your hand after holding it there for several seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws. The safest option during hot weather is to walk dogs during the coolest times of the day, such as early morning or late evening. On exceptionally hot days, it may be best to avoid walks altogether and instead focus on enrichment activities and keeping your dog cool and comfortable at home.”

Precautions during hot weather

Dogs Trust Shoreham is advising owners to take the following precautions during periods of hot weather:

Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. On very hot days, consider skipping walks entirely.

Before heading out, check pavements and roads with the back of your hand for five seconds. If they feel too hot for you, they are too hot for your dog’s paws.

Stick to grassy, shaded areas wherever possible, and minimise time on tarmac or concrete.

Always carry fresh water when out with your dog and ensure they have access to cool drinking water at home.

Keep exercise to a minimum and avoid games or activities that may cause dogs to overheat.

Never leave your dog alone in a vehicle, even for a few minutes or with the windows open.

Provide cool resting places, such as shaded areas, cooling mats or frozen treats made from pet-friendly ingredients.

Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea or collapse, and contact a vet immediately if you are concerned.

Suspected heatstroke

Dogs Trust also reminds owners to “cool first, transport second” if they suspect their dog is suffering from heatstroke.

Owners should:

Stop any exercise or activity immediately.

Move the dog to a cool, shaded area.

Offer drinking water.

Begin cooling the dog with water that is cooler than their body temperature. Young, healthy dogs can be immersed in cold water if possible, while older dogs or those with health conditions should be sprayed with cold water and cooled with air movement.

Avoid placing wet towels over the dog, as these can trap heat.

Tales From Under the Kitchen Sink lifts the lid on the unseen world of domestic cleaning, from the spotless to the chaotic, the untidy and the unmanageable. Drawing on years of running a cleaning business, T.K Robinson shares the funny, shocking and surprisingly touching stories that unfold while scrubbing and polishing.

From difficult clients and awkward encounters to moments of quiet humanity, this is a sharp and witty, heartfelt look at the work that keeps homes – and lives – in order. Honest, relatable and laugh out loud in places, this book is for anyone who’s ever cleaned up someone else’s mess.

T.K Robinson’s stories celebrate the resilience and the humour hidden in domestic cleaning. She is based in West Sussex.

She explains: “I just had to write this! Most people never see the private world behind people’s doors. I’ve seen wealth, chaos, cruelty, and the absurd, all through the lens of a mop and bucket. It isn’t just a cleaning memoir; it’s a story about people and what happens in their homes. I wanted to show the humour in cleaning, the disgusting houses as well as the spotless mansions. After saying that I could write a whole book about my experience as a house cleaner, and finally, I did.”

With brilliant live music, hands‑on children’s activities, inspiring talks, and delicious food and drink, The Wake is where music breathes in the open air – drifting between sound, sky and Sussex countryside. This year brings 17 acts across three stages, including Mercury Prize-winning Badly Drawn Boy, the fantastic indie force The Tubs, and dream‑pop shimmer from Radhika.
Tucked into the fields and woodland of Loxwood Meadow, it’s a festival that feels open in every sense. Friendly, affordable, easy to settle into – the kind of place where you arrive for the music and end up staying for the atmosphere.

Created by the founders of Green Man, The Wake is proudly independent and lovingly curated. Its immersive woodland setting gives every performance room to shine, letting the songs mingle with birdsong and the rustle of leaves.

This is a festival built for memories, not masses. A place where melodies wander through the trees, where you can slow down, explore, and stumble across something unexpected.
Joyful moments, surprising moments, moments that lift you out of the everyday – all shaped by the natural world around you. Stay a while and let The Wake wake something in you.

Local charity Children’s BookFest (CBF) is inviting families to discover that reading is everywhere this summer with the launch of a free summer reading bingo bookmark.

Supported by Chichester Festival Theatre, the campaign features a colourful bookmark, which folds out into an illustrated bingo card encouraging children to tick off nine different types of reading activity throughout the summer holidays. From maps and menus to recipes, subtitles and song lyrics, the challenge is designed to show children that reading can be found everywhere.

Children who complete the bingo card can enter a prize draw to win book tokens.

‘Go All In’ campaign

The initiative forms part of Children’s BookFest’s Chichester Go All In campaign for the National Year of Reading 2026 and comes as new research from the National Literacy Trust reveals that children’s enjoyment of reading and daily reading habits have increased for the first time in five years. The Trust highlighted the important role played by libraries, schools, volunteers and community organisations in helping children develop positive reading habits.

Since launching in 2019, Children’s BookFest has gifted more than 30,000 brand-new books to children and created opportunities for thousands of young people to meet authors, poets and illustrators in person. The charity now works with schools across Chichester, Bognor Regis and Midhurst and recently launched BookFest YA, extending its work into secondary schools.

Penny Tomlinson Co-founder of CBF with bookmarks

Chichester Gala

Families visiting Chichester Gala on Saturday 27 June will be among the first to pick up the colourful bookmark.

Georgina Lippiett, Festival Director at Children’s BookFest, said: “We are delighted to be launching our Reading is Everywhere Summer Bingo Bookmarks at this year’s Chichester Gala. As the Mayor of Chichester’s chosen charity for this year, we are especially grateful for the opportunity to share our first ever summer reading initiative with families from across the district at one of Chichester’s best-loved community events. The National Literacy Trust findings are hugely encouraging. After years of decline, it is wonderful to see more children saying they enjoy reading and are choosing to read in their free time. We were particularly pleased to see recognition of the role that libraries, schools, volunteers and community organisations play in making that happen.

“At Children’s BookFest, our mission has always been simple: to help children discover the joy of reading. Whether that’s through meeting an author, receiving a book of their own, or taking part in something as simple as our summer reading bingo, we want children to see reading as something enjoyable, inspiring and part of everyday life.

“We’re incredibly grateful to illustrator Matt Carr for bringing the bookmark to life and to Chichester Festival Theatre for their continued support. We hope families will join us this summer in celebrating the idea that reading really is everywhere.”

Visitors to the Children’s BookFest stand at Chichester Gala will also have the opportunity to win brand new books.

Bookmark pick up spots & join the bingo

Following the Gala, bookmarks will be available free of charge from Chichester Festival Theatre, Chichester Library, Chichester District Foodbank, New Park Centre and a number of locations across the city. Families will also be able to download and print their own copy via the Children’s BookFest website.

Fatboy Slim, said “I’ve been lucky enough to play huge stages all over the world, but grassroots venues are where it all started for me and where music scenes really begin, where artists learn their craft, where communities form, and where people come together purely for the love of it. Without grassroots venues, independent promoters and local crowds taking a chance on something new, none of this exists.

“These spaces are vital for culture and for local communities, so if there’s anything I can do to help shine a light on them and help keep that spirit alive, I’m more than happy to be involved.
This summer’s biggest live music weekend is happening in a venue near you. Everywhere At Once is more than a line-up of gigs. It’s a national moment to celebrate the grassroots music ecosystem.

In 2021, The National Lottery and MVT cemented their partnership with The National Lottery’s Revive Live Tour, which helped venues re-open and rebuild following the impact of Covid. Everywhere At Once, powered by The National Lottery, will be delivered by Music Venue Trust alongside Save Our Scene and the Association of Independent Promoters, bringing the grassroots network together for a shared national moment of live music.

Audiences will also be given the opportunity to support a range of exceptional and vital music charities, with donations supporting War Child, Nordoff and Robbins, Help Musicians and Teenage Cancer Trust.

Michael and Pippa Logan have raised almost £40,000 for Mary’s Meals, after 20 years of garden parties and supporting the charity.

Two decades fundraising

An inspirational Seaford couple have celebrated two decades of fundraising at their 20th and final annual garden party, with the money raised helping to feed hungry children.

Michael, 86, and Pippa, 79, have raised a phenomenal £39,300 for school feeding charity Mary’s Meals since they began fundraising 20 years ago. Their final garden party took place on Sunday 14 June, marking the end of an era for the incredible annual event, which they described as “an absolute pleasure”.

Michael and Pippa Logan

School meals for millions of children

Mary’s Meals, founded in a shed in the Scottish Highlands in 2002, provides school meals to more than three million children in some of the world’s poorest communities in 16 countries, including Ethiopia, Lebanon and South Sudan. The promise of a daily meal encourages children into the classroom where they gain an education and hope for a brighter future.

After reading about the charity in a Rotary magazine, the couple sprang into action and began a fundraising mission. Michael says: “The principle is: if you go to school and get a meal – that encourages the child to go to school and get a good education. That’s so important in this world today and even more important for the future.”

For over 20 years, the couple have raised funds through various activities, such as selling jam at the local garden centre and plants from their own back garden. The garden parties have become a yearly staple in the community, mobilising family and friends to support their efforts and raise money for Mary’s Meals as well as local causes, this year’s beneficiary being Friends of Eastbourne Hospital. Highlights of this year’s party included live music, a tombola, a raffle and sales of their homemade jams and marmalades, with Pippa describing it as “a really good, happy day”.

Homemade jams and marmalades

Popular community event

Pippa discusses how the garden parties began and says: “We just decided we had a big garden and we thought it was an opportunity to raise money for charity.” Since then, the day has become a popular local event, with 200-300 people attending each year. The couple credit the event’s success to the support of their family and community, with Pippa explaining: “I’ve had a couple of helpers who have been coming for 20 years from day one. They come every year and never let me down.” One friend even makes the yearly trip from Ireland to Seaford and “hasn’t missed one,” according to Pippa.

Michael and Pippa’s commitment to fundraising has spanned generations, with their children and grandchildren joining their mission to raise funds. The couple’s endless passion to help others has also led them to sponsor a school in Liberia for the past nine years through Mary’s Meals’ Feed A School programme.

Motivation for a better future

Pippa, a retired district nurse, says: “The kids themselves say how much it has helped them. Some of them are now in higher education and have jobs, and it’s thanks to Mary’s Meals.”

By fundraising for the charity, Michael and Pippa have helped children like 15-year-old Valicia from Madagascar. She is the eldest of four children in a rural farming family who often struggle to make ends meet. Mary’s Meals provides her with a daily meal which not only fills her empty stomach but also motivates her to go to school and work towards a better future.

Valicia says that without food, “it is difficult to concentrate in class, and some children even fall asleep because they are hungry”. After receiving Mary’s Meals at school, she now has energy to learn and says she feels “happy and motivated.”

‘An incredible thing’

The founder of Mary’s Meals, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, has himself been blown away by Michael and Pippa’s heroic fundraising efforts. In a video thanking the couple, he commented: “What you have done in feeding so many children for so long is an incredible thing.”

Find out more

It costs just £19.15 to feed a child for an entire school year. To find out more about Mary’s Meals and how to get involved in fundraising, please visit www.marysmeals.org.uk

Adults with learning disabilities and autism supported by Aldingbourne Trust have written, recorded and released their own England World Cup anthem, It’s Gonna Be Us, for this summer’s World Cup 2026.

Passion for football, music & teamwork

Created through Aldingbourne Country Centre’s Performing Arts Group, the original song combines a passion for football, music and teamwork, giving the people involved the opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage while cheering on England’s journey in the tournament. The project saw participants involved throughout the creative process, from writing lyrics and recording vocals to starring in the official music video. Parts of the video were filmed at Sussex FA’s recent inclusive football tournament, highlighting the important role sport plays in bringing communities together.

The song reflects the excitement many of the people supported by Aldingbourne Trust feel about football and the World Cup, while demonstrating the confidence, skills and creativity that can flourish when people are given the opportunity to shine.

Watch, listen & share

It’s Gonna Be Us is available now on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, where football fans are encouraged to watch, listen and share.

Adam Pattenden, Digital Marketing Officer at Aldingbourne Trust said: “What started as a fun idea quickly grew into a full scale music video project. The people we support were involved every step of the way, from developing ideas to performing on camera. It’s been incredible to see their enthusiasm, creativity and pride throughout the process. Projects like this give people the chance to express themselves, work together and be part of something exciting. We hope football fans enjoy the song as much as we enjoyed creating it. As the chorus says, It’s Gonna Be Us!”

Commitment to create meaningful opportunities

The project forms part of Aldingbourne Country Centre’s ongoing commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and autism, helping people build confidence, develop skills and share their talents with the wider community.

Matt Swanson, Deputy Manager at Aldingbourne Country Centre, added: “The people we support are huge England fans and have loved putting their creativity and passion into this project. The song was created and performed by our Performing Arts Group and recorded here at the centre by Mike at Fryed Music. Everyone has been energised by bringing this catchy song to life and we’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved”

Members of the Performing Arts Group also shared their experience of creating the song: “We loved every minute of making the song. It was brilliant to work together, share ideas and show our support for England. Recording the track was an amazing experience and we’re proud to be sharing something we hope brings people together. We’d love to do more projects like this in the future.”

The song and accompanying music video have received positive feedback online, with supporters praising the group’s enthusiasm, talent and infectious energy.

It’s Gonna Be Us was written and recorded by adults with learning disabilities and autism supported by Aldingbourne Country Centre ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With another heatwave forecast this week, week commencing 22 June, South East Water is asking customers to use water for essential purposes only to help keep taps flowing for everyone.

As anticipated the demand for water is higher due to the hot weather. Yesterday, (Sunday, 21 June) the total amount of water treated and put into South East Water’s network was 644 million litres, that’s 56 million litres more than the daily average for June (588 million litres). It’s anticipated that this figure will rise further with hotter weather forecast for later this week.

To help meet this demand the drinking water company is:

Working hard to keep Water Treatment Works operating at capacity 24/7

Increasing the number of teams out fixing bursts and leaks to save more water

Re-routing water around its network

Using its fleet of tankers to inject water into the network and fill drinking water storage tanks

Managing pressure across the network

Despite these actions, when demand is as high as this on consecutive days, those living at the far end of the pipeline network, or on higher ground, can experience supply issues. This is because water is being used faster than it can be treated to refill the pipes and storage tanks.

Until the temperatures reduce, customers are being asked to make simple changes to help keep the taps flowing for everyone and prevent further measures. These include:

Pausing all hose use, including for refilling paddling pools, hot tubs and jet washing

Only using water for hygiene, drinking and cooking

The drinking water company is taking direct action to build more resilience into its network to cope with the changing climate and more frequent heatwaves, however building this infrastructure takes time. South East Water is focused on delivering its long-term business plan, the most ambitious ever produced by the Company. It details a proposed investment of £2.1 billion over five years and is designed to improve operational resilience while keeping customer bills affordable.

Anthony Dinneen, aged 29, who lives in Crawley took part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) event at the K2 Crawley in Pease Pottage in April. He did so to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation, Amputation Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK.

Anthony’s decision to step into the ring was inspired by several events in his life, the most significant being the amputation of his big toe in 2019, and the loss of his father to suicide in 2016.

Anthony said, “When I was twenty one, I was in an accident at work that chopped off one of my big toes. This led to me being out of work for five years, and after multiple complications, infections and operations I eventually had to have it amputated. I’ve struggled with basic things like balance ever since, which took a real toll on my confidence. I knew entering Ultra White Collar Boxing was going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but am so proud to have proved to myself what I am capable of.”

He continued, “Ten years ago I also sadly lost my dad. He was hiding his pain from us, which is so common for many other suicide cases. The loss of my dad impacted every one of my family members, I hope that by raising awareness for mental health I can encourage more people to reach out for help, and get support.”

Participants like Anthony are given the opportunity to take part in eight weeks of free professional boxing training at gyms, before a showcase event in front of hundreds or thousands of spectators. He trained at Lumpini Fight Academy in Crawley under the guidance of respected coach John Jarvis.

Talking about the preparation, Anthony said, “The training made me take a look at my lifestyle differently. I took my diet more seriously and managed to give up smoking, which is something I never thought I was capable of. I also made so many friends along the way, which was amazing. The training helped me with my mental health in general, it taught me what it means to be resilient, and gave me confidence in my ability to do hard things.”

Anthony competed against Tyler Reed, aged 22, in a closely-contested match.

Talking of his experience on the night, he added, “I was the last bout of the night, so naturally my nerves started to creep in. But as soon as I stepped into the ring and reminded myself of my ‘why’, I was ready to give it my absolute all for those six minutes. Even though I lost, I had an unforgettable night – the atmosphere was amazing!”

Anthony chose ‘This is the Life’ by The Highstool Prophets as his walk out music, a song chosen by his mother. On the night he also had a big group of 20 people supporting him, made up of family and friends.

Anthony loved the experience so much that he is going to sign up for another Ultra White Collar Boxing event taking place in July.

When asked what he would say to anyone thinking about signing up, Anthony said: “Trust me when I say you will never live to regret it. Yes, it is challenging at times. But stepping out of your comfort zone and proving your inner voice that you can do hard things is something you will keep in your back pocket for life. Now I know I can do anything if I set my mind to it – by signing up to a bout you’ll gain this type of inner strength too!”

Participants like Anthony are asked to raise at least £50 for their chosen charity – a target he comfortably surpassed.

So far, Ultra Events has raised a staggering £43.5 million for charity.

For anyone inspired by Anthony’s story to take part in Ultra White Collar Boxing, the next UWCB event in Crawley takes place on 18th July with training already underway.

A celebration of reading and music – that’s the theme of this year’s free Summer Reading Challenge in our West Sussex libraries. Called Read to the Beat, it encourages children to explore the link between storytelling and sound.

West Sussex County Council’s library service works to help improve children’s reading skills and confidence, which the challenge does in a fun way.

How to get involved

Children can register from 15 June, ready to start in any of the 36 libraries from 4 July. Running throughout the summer until 12 September, the challenge is aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years, whilst under-4s can take part in a Mini Challenge.

Once registered online at libraries.westsussex.gov.uk/src, children receive a special code word. They then reveal this to staff at their local library to get a Read to the Beat sticker booklet and a bespoke edition of Storytime magazine.

Children taking part will have access to a wide range of books -including stories, comic books, audiobooks, information books about many topics, and not forgetting downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks!

They will have all summer to enjoy books and achieve personalised reading goals, returning to the library several times to discuss the books they have been reading with Summer Reading Challenge volunteers, collecting stickers and other exciting rewards along the way. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the challenge can apply here, before 3 July.

Helping to improve literacy

A county council spokesperson said: “The work of the county council’s library service is helping to improve literacy, and the challenge is a great way to encourage reading for pleasure during the long summer holiday. Children can also become library members for free or refresh their library card if it’s their first visit for a while. There are fun activities in libraries throughout the summer too, including a Character Hunt with a prize draw, and events which tie ‘books and beats’ together. With 2026 being the National Year of Reading, families are encouraged to ‘Go All In’ on whatever excites and interests them.”

Something for children & adults

Children who finish the challenge will be rewarded with a Read to the Beat certificate and medal. Even our youngest readers will receive a certificate and gold medal sticker. Adults may also like to pick up a few books for themselves on their family visit to the library.

Research shows that children enjoy reading and improve their skills when adults around them read too.
