Dogs Trust Shoreham warns about scorching pavements and calls for owners to avoid walks during hot weather

As a rare red heat warning is issued in parts of the country this week with rising temperatures across the UK, Dogs Trust Shoreham is urging owners to think carefully about when to walk their dogs, warning that hot pavements and warm conditions can quickly put dogs at risk.

Risks for dogs

While many owners look forward to dog walks on sunny days, Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is reminding people that pavements and parks can become dangerously hot, and exercise increases the risk of heat-related illness such as heat stroke.

Unlike humans, dogs can’t regulate their body temperature by sweating and rely mainly on panting to cool themselves down. This means that walking, playing or spending time in hot areas can quickly become uncomfortable and dangerous.

Pavements and roads absorb heat throughout the day and can become hot enough to burn a dog’s paw pads. Dogs Trust is encouraging owners to avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day and instead choose cooler periods, such as early morning or late evening. On particularly hot days, it is safer to skip walks altogether and provide alternative forms of enrichment at home.

Emily Mills, Veterinary Projects Manager at Dogs Trust, said: “Many owners enjoy getting outside with their dogs when the sun comes out, but warm weather can pose serious risks. Dogs are much more vulnerable to heat than people, and can quickly become uncomfortable or develop heat-related illness, especially if they’re exercised during the hottest parts of the day. Hot pavements can also cause painful burns to dogs’ paw pads. If the ground feels too hot for the back of your hand after holding it there for several seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws. The safest option during hot weather is to walk dogs during the coolest times of the day, such as early morning or late evening. On exceptionally hot days, it may be best to avoid walks altogether and instead focus on enrichment activities and keeping your dog cool and comfortable at home.”

Precautions during hot weather

Dogs Trust Shoreham is advising owners to take the following precautions during periods of hot weather:

Walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. On very hot days, consider skipping walks entirely.

Before heading out, check pavements and roads with the back of your hand for five seconds. If they feel too hot for you, they are too hot for your dog’s paws.

Stick to grassy, shaded areas wherever possible, and minimise time on tarmac or concrete.

Always carry fresh water when out with your dog and ensure they have access to cool drinking water at home.

Keep exercise to a minimum and avoid games or activities that may cause dogs to overheat.

Never leave your dog alone in a vehicle, even for a few minutes or with the windows open.

Provide cool resting places, such as shaded areas, cooling mats or frozen treats made from pet-friendly ingredients.

Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea or collapse, and contact a vet immediately if you are concerned.

Suspected heatstroke

Dogs Trust also reminds owners to “cool first, transport second” if they suspect their dog is suffering from heatstroke.

Owners should:

Stop any exercise or activity immediately.

Move the dog to a cool, shaded area.

Offer drinking water.

Begin cooling the dog with water that is cooler than their body temperature. Young, healthy dogs can be immersed in cold water if possible, while older dogs or those with health conditions should be sprayed with cold water and cooled with air movement.

Avoid placing wet towels over the dog, as these can trap heat.

Contact a vet immediately and continue cooling during transport.

Heatstroke can affect any type of dog, but certain breeds and types of dogs are at increased risk, including brachycephalic or flat-faced breeds such as English Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs, as well as older dogs, overweight dogs and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

Keep your dog safe this summer

With temperatures set to remain high, Dogs Trust Shoreham is urging owners to remember that dogs do not need a daily walk if conditions are unsafe, and that missing a walk is far preferable to risking painful paw burns or heat-related illness.

Behind every closed door, there’s a story – and some of them come with bleach.

Tales From Under the Kitchen Sink lifts the lid on the unseen world of domestic cleaning, from the spotless to the chaotic, the untidy and the unmanageable. Drawing on years of running a cleaning business, T.K Robinson shares the funny, shocking and surprisingly touching stories that unfold while scrubbing and polishing.

From difficult clients and awkward encounters to moments of quiet humanity, this is a sharp and witty, heartfelt look at the work that keeps homes – and lives – in order. Honest, relatable and laugh out loud in places, this book is for anyone who’s ever cleaned up someone else’s mess.

T.K Robinson’s stories celebrate the resilience and the humour hidden in domestic cleaning. She is based in West Sussex.

She explains: “I just had to write this! Most people never see the private world behind people’s doors. I’ve seen wealth, chaos, cruelty, and the absurd, all through the lens of a mop and bucket. It isn’t just a cleaning memoir; it’s a story about people and what happens in their homes. I wanted to show the humour in cleaning, the disgusting houses as well as the spotless mansions. After saying that I could write a whole book about my experience as a house cleaner, and finally, I did.”

Local charity Children’s BookFest (CBF) is inviting families to discover that reading is everywhere this summer with the launch of a free summer reading bingo bookmark.

Supported by Chichester Festival Theatre, the campaign features a colourful bookmark, which folds out into an illustrated bingo card encouraging children to tick off nine different types of reading activity throughout the summer holidays. From maps and menus to recipes, subtitles and song lyrics, the challenge is designed to show children that reading can be found everywhere.

Children who complete the bingo card can enter a prize draw to win book tokens.

‘Go All In’ campaign

The initiative forms part of Children’s BookFest’s Chichester Go All In campaign for the National Year of Reading 2026 and comes as new research from the National Literacy Trust reveals that children’s enjoyment of reading and daily reading habits have increased for the first time in five years. The Trust highlighted the important role played by libraries, schools, volunteers and community organisations in helping children develop positive reading habits.

Since launching in 2019, Children’s BookFest has gifted more than 30,000 brand-new books to children and created opportunities for thousands of young people to meet authors, poets and illustrators in person. The charity now works with schools across Chichester, Bognor Regis and Midhurst and recently launched BookFest YA, extending its work into secondary schools.

Chichester Gala

Families visiting Chichester Gala on Saturday 27 June will be among the first to pick up the colourful bookmark.

Georgina Lippiett, Festival Director at Children’s BookFest, said: “We are delighted to be launching our Reading is Everywhere Summer Bingo Bookmarks at this year’s Chichester Gala. As the Mayor of Chichester’s chosen charity for this year, we are especially grateful for the opportunity to share our first ever summer reading initiative with families from across the district at one of Chichester’s best-loved community events. The National Literacy Trust findings are hugely encouraging. After years of decline, it is wonderful to see more children saying they enjoy reading and are choosing to read in their free time. We were particularly pleased to see recognition of the role that libraries, schools, volunteers and community organisations play in making that happen.

“At Children’s BookFest, our mission has always been simple: to help children discover the joy of reading. Whether that’s through meeting an author, receiving a book of their own, or taking part in something as simple as our summer reading bingo, we want children to see reading as something enjoyable, inspiring and part of everyday life.

“We’re incredibly grateful to illustrator Matt Carr for bringing the bookmark to life and to Chichester Festival Theatre for their continued support. We hope families will join us this summer in celebrating the idea that reading really is everywhere.”

Visitors to the Children’s BookFest stand at Chichester Gala will also have the opportunity to win brand new books.

Bookmark pick up spots & join the bingo

Following the Gala, bookmarks will be available free of charge from Chichester Festival Theatre, Chichester Library, Chichester District Foodbank, New Park Centre and a number of locations across the city. Families will also be able to download and print their own copy via the Children’s BookFest website.

More than 2,000 artists performing across 400+ grassroots venues nationwide, spanning indie, dance, pop, rock, grime, electronic, jazz, folk, punk, soul and more.

Festival on your doorstop

Everywhere At Once, powered by The National Lottery and Music Venue Trust, is the UK’s biggest music festival…happening right on your doorstep. From June 26-28th 2026, grassroots music venues across the nation will be coming together for one epic weekend.

Taking place on what would have been the Glastonbury Festival weekend, more than 400 grassroots music venues will stage hundreds of live music events featuring more than 2000 artists, under the banner of Everywhere At Once, the UK’s biggest festival.

Big names performing

Artists including Fatboy Slim, Becky Hill, Rizzle Kicks, Tinie Tempah, Glenn Tilbrook, The Lathums, The Divine Comedy, Toddla T, Jodie Harsh, Master Peace, Inspiral Carpets, Dave McCabe, Lucy Spraggan, Chris Helme, Gene, D Double E, P Money, Westside Cowboy, and many more are set to play the biggest celebration of grassroots live music ever staged in the UK.

Fatboy Slim

“Grassroots venues are where it all started…”

Fatboy Slim, said “I’ve been lucky enough to play huge stages all over the world, but grassroots venues are where it all started for me and where music scenes really begin, where artists learn their craft, where communities form, and where people come together purely for the love of it. Without grassroots venues, independent promoters and local crowds taking a chance on something new, none of this exists.

“These spaces are vital for culture and for local communities, so if there’s anything I can do to help shine a light on them and help keep that spirit alive, I’m more than happy to be involved. And if you care about music, go out and support your local venues, buy a ticket, discover somebody new, and be part of keeping those scenes alive.”

UK music scene spectrum

More than 2,000 artists will perform across the weekend, representing the full spectrum of the UK’s music scene. From dance and electronic music to indie, rock, grime, pop, jazz, folk, punk, soul and more, Everywhere At Once showcases the extraordinary diversity and creativity thriving in grassroots venues across the country. Supported by the National Lottery, established artists will perform intimate grassroots venue shows alongside emerging local talent and breakthrough new acts, highlighting the vital role these venues play in developing the next generation of British music.

National Lottery players are one of the biggest backers of grassroots music – because of them, over £1billion has gone to support music in every corner of the country. The National Lottery’s backing for Everywhere At Once will help venues and independent promoters champion new artists and programme a bold, exciting weekend in communities across the UK.

This summer’s biggest live music weekend is happening in a venue near you. Everywhere At Once is more than a line-up of gigs. It’s a national moment to celebrate the grassroots music ecosystem.

In 2021, The National Lottery and MVT cemented their partnership with The National Lottery’s Revive Live Tour, which helped venues re-open and rebuild following the impact of Covid. Everywhere At Once, powered by The National Lottery, will be delivered by Music Venue Trust alongside Save Our Scene and the Association of Independent Promoters, bringing the grassroots network together for a shared national moment of live music.

Audiences will also be given the opportunity to support a range of exceptional and vital music charities, with donations supporting War Child, Nordoff and Robbins, Help Musicians and Teenage Cancer Trust.

Michael and Pippa Logan have raised almost £40,000 for Mary’s Meals, after 20 years of garden parties and supporting the charity.

Two decades fundraising

An inspirational Seaford couple have celebrated two decades of fundraising at their 20th and final annual garden party, with the money raised helping to feed hungry children.

Michael, 86, and Pippa, 79, have raised a phenomenal £39,300 for school feeding charity Mary’s Meals since they began fundraising 20 years ago. Their final garden party took place on Sunday 14 June, marking the end of an era for the incredible annual event, which they described as “an absolute pleasure”.

School meals for millions of children

Mary’s Meals, founded in a shed in the Scottish Highlands in 2002, provides school meals to more than three million children in some of the world’s poorest communities in 16 countries, including Ethiopia, Lebanon and South Sudan. The promise of a daily meal encourages children into the classroom where they gain an education and hope for a brighter future.

After reading about the charity in a Rotary magazine, the couple sprang into action and began a fundraising mission. Michael says: “The principle is: if you go to school and get a meal – that encourages the child to go to school and get a good education. That’s so important in this world today and even more important for the future.”

For over 20 years, the couple have raised funds through various activities, such as selling jam at the local garden centre and plants from their own back garden. The garden parties have become a yearly staple in the community, mobilising family and friends to support their efforts and raise money for Mary’s Meals as well as local causes, this year’s beneficiary being Friends of Eastbourne Hospital. Highlights of this year’s party included live music, a tombola, a raffle and sales of their homemade jams and marmalades, with Pippa describing it as “a really good, happy day”.

Homemade jams and marmalades

Popular community event

Pippa discusses how the garden parties began and says: “We just decided we had a big garden and we thought it was an opportunity to raise money for charity.” Since then, the day has become a popular local event, with 200-300 people attending each year. The couple credit the event’s success to the support of their family and community, with Pippa explaining: “I’ve had a couple of helpers who have been coming for 20 years from day one. They come every year and never let me down.” One friend even makes the yearly trip from Ireland to Seaford and “hasn’t missed one,” according to Pippa.

Michael and Pippa’s commitment to fundraising has spanned generations, with their children and grandchildren joining their mission to raise funds. The couple’s endless passion to help others has also led them to sponsor a school in Liberia for the past nine years through Mary’s Meals’ Feed A School programme.

Motivation for a better future

Pippa, a retired district nurse, says: “The kids themselves say how much it has helped them. Some of them are now in higher education and have jobs, and it’s thanks to Mary’s Meals.”

By fundraising for the charity, Michael and Pippa have helped children like 15-year-old Valicia from Madagascar. She is the eldest of four children in a rural farming family who often struggle to make ends meet. Mary’s Meals provides her with a daily meal which not only fills her empty stomach but also motivates her to go to school and work towards a better future.

Valicia says that without food, “it is difficult to concentrate in class, and some children even fall asleep because they are hungry”. After receiving Mary’s Meals at school, she now has energy to learn and says she feels “happy and motivated.”

‘An incredible thing’

The founder of Mary’s Meals, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, has himself been blown away by Michael and Pippa’s heroic fundraising efforts. In a video thanking the couple, he commented: “What you have done in feeding so many children for so long is an incredible thing.”

Adults with Learning Disabilities and Autism supported by Aldingbourne Trust release their own England World Cup song.

Adults with learning disabilities and autism supported by Aldingbourne Trust have written, recorded and released their own England World Cup anthem, It’s Gonna Be Us, for this summer’s World Cup 2026.

Passion for football, music & teamwork

Created through Aldingbourne Country Centre’s Performing Arts Group, the original song combines a passion for football, music and teamwork, giving the people involved the opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage while cheering on England’s journey in the tournament. The project saw participants involved throughout the creative process, from writing lyrics and recording vocals to starring in the official music video. Parts of the video were filmed at Sussex FA’s recent inclusive football tournament, highlighting the important role sport plays in bringing communities together.

The song reflects the excitement many of the people supported by Aldingbourne Trust feel about football and the World Cup, while demonstrating the confidence, skills and creativity that can flourish when people are given the opportunity to shine.

Watch, listen & share

It’s Gonna Be Us is available now on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, where football fans are encouraged to watch, listen and share.

Adam Pattenden, Digital Marketing Officer at Aldingbourne Trust said: “What started as a fun idea quickly grew into a full scale music video project. The people we support were involved every step of the way, from developing ideas to performing on camera. It’s been incredible to see their enthusiasm, creativity and pride throughout the process. Projects like this give people the chance to express themselves, work together and be part of something exciting. We hope football fans enjoy the song as much as we enjoyed creating it. As the chorus says, It’s Gonna Be Us!”

Commitment to create meaningful opportunities

The project forms part of Aldingbourne Country Centre’s ongoing commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and autism, helping people build confidence, develop skills and share their talents with the wider community.

Matt Swanson, Deputy Manager at Aldingbourne Country Centre, added: “The people we support are huge England fans and have loved putting their creativity and passion into this project. The song was created and performed by our Performing Arts Group and recorded here at the centre by Mike at Fryed Music. Everyone has been energised by bringing this catchy song to life and we’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved”

Members of the Performing Arts Group also shared their experience of creating the song: “We loved every minute of making the song. It was brilliant to work together, share ideas and show our support for England. Recording the track was an amazing experience and we’re proud to be sharing something we hope brings people together. We’d love to do more projects like this in the future.”

The song and accompanying music video have received positive feedback online, with supporters praising the group’s enthusiasm, talent and infectious energy.

About Aldingbourne Country Centre

Aldingbourne Country Centre is part of the Aldingbourne Trust, a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism to live independent and fulfilling lives. Through employment opportunities, training, social activities and creative projects, the Trust helps people build confidence, develop skills and achieve their goals.
It’s Gonna Be Us was written and recorded by adults with learning disabilities and autism supported by Aldingbourne Country Centre ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With another heatwave forecast this week, week commencing 22 June, South East Water is asking customers to use water for essential purposes only to help keep taps flowing for everyone.

As anticipated the demand for water is higher due to the hot weather. Yesterday, (Sunday, 21 June) the total amount of water treated and put into South East Water’s network was 644 million litres, that’s 56 million litres more than the daily average for June (588 million litres). It’s anticipated that this figure will rise further with hotter weather forecast for later this week.

To help meet this demand the drinking water company is:

Working hard to keep Water Treatment Works operating at capacity 24/7

Increasing the number of teams out fixing bursts and leaks to save more water

Re-routing water around its network

Using its fleet of tankers to inject water into the network and fill drinking water storage tanks

Managing pressure across the network

Despite these actions, when demand is as high as this on consecutive days, those living at the far end of the pipeline network, or on higher ground, can experience supply issues. This is because water is being used faster than it can be treated to refill the pipes and storage tanks.

Until the temperatures reduce, customers are being asked to make simple changes to help keep the taps flowing for everyone and prevent further measures. These include:

Pausing all hose use, including for refilling paddling pools, hot tubs and jet washing

Only using water for hygiene, drinking and cooking

The drinking water company is taking direct action to build more resilience into its network to cope with the changing climate and more frequent heatwaves, however building this infrastructure takes time. South East Water is focused on delivering its long-term business plan, the most ambitious ever produced by the Company. It details a proposed investment of £2.1 billion over five years and is designed to improve operational resilience while keeping customer bills affordable.

Anthony Dinneen, aged 29, who lives in Crawley took part in an Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) event at the K2 Crawley in Pease Pottage in April. He did so to raise funds for the Mental Health Foundation, Amputation Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK.

Anthony’s decision to step into the ring was inspired by several events in his life, the most significant being the amputation of his big toe in 2019, and the loss of his father to suicide in 2016.

Anthony said, “When I was twenty one, I was in an accident at work that chopped off one of my big toes. This led to me being out of work for five years, and after multiple complications, infections and operations I eventually had to have it amputated. I’ve struggled with basic things like balance ever since, which took a real toll on my confidence. I knew entering Ultra White Collar Boxing was going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but am so proud to have proved to myself what I am capable of.”

He continued, “Ten years ago I also sadly lost my dad. He was hiding his pain from us, which is so common for many other suicide cases. The loss of my dad impacted every one of my family members, I hope that by raising awareness for mental health I can encourage more people to reach out for help, and get support.”

Participants like Anthony are given the opportunity to take part in eight weeks of free professional boxing training at gyms, before a showcase event in front of hundreds or thousands of spectators. He trained at Lumpini Fight Academy in Crawley under the guidance of respected coach John Jarvis.

Talking about the preparation, Anthony said, “The training made me take a look at my lifestyle differently. I took my diet more seriously and managed to give up smoking, which is something I never thought I was capable of. I also made so many friends along the way, which was amazing. The training helped me with my mental health in general, it taught me what it means to be resilient, and gave me confidence in my ability to do hard things.”

Anthony competed against Tyler Reed, aged 22, in a closely-contested match.

Talking of his experience on the night, he added, “I was the last bout of the night, so naturally my nerves started to creep in. But as soon as I stepped into the ring and reminded myself of my ‘why’, I was ready to give it my absolute all for those six minutes. Even though I lost, I had an unforgettable night – the atmosphere was amazing!”

Anthony chose ‘This is the Life’ by The Highstool Prophets as his walk out music, a song chosen by his mother. On the night he also had a big group of 20 people supporting him, made up of family and friends.

Anthony loved the experience so much that he is going to sign up for another Ultra White Collar Boxing event taking place in July.

When asked what he would say to anyone thinking about signing up, Anthony said: “Trust me when I say you will never live to regret it. Yes, it is challenging at times. But stepping out of your comfort zone and proving your inner voice that you can do hard things is something you will keep in your back pocket for life. Now I know I can do anything if I set my mind to it – by signing up to a bout you’ll gain this type of inner strength too!”

Participants like Anthony are asked to raise at least £50 for their chosen charity – a target he comfortably surpassed.

So far, Ultra Events has raised a staggering £43.5 million for charity.

For anyone inspired by Anthony’s story to take part in Ultra White Collar Boxing, the next UWCB event in Crawley takes place on 18th July with training already underway. More information can be found here: https://ultrawhitecollarboxing.co.uk/locations/crawley/

A celebration of reading and music – that’s the theme of this year’s free Summer Reading Challenge in our West Sussex libraries. Called Read to the Beat, it encourages children to explore the link between storytelling and sound.

West Sussex County Council’s library service works to help improve children’s reading skills and confidence, which the challenge does in a fun way.

How to get involved

Children can register from 15 June, ready to start in any of the 36 libraries from 4 July. Running throughout the summer until 12 September, the challenge is aimed at children aged 4 to 11 years, whilst under-4s can take part in a Mini Challenge.

Once registered online at libraries.westsussex.gov.uk/src, children receive a special code word. They then reveal this to staff at their local library to get a Read to the Beat sticker booklet and a bespoke edition of Storytime magazine.

Children taking part will have access to a wide range of books -including stories, comic books, audiobooks, information books about many topics, and not forgetting downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks!

They will have all summer to enjoy books and achieve personalised reading goals, returning to the library several times to discuss the books they have been reading with Summer Reading Challenge volunteers, collecting stickers and other exciting rewards along the way. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the challenge can apply here, before 3 July.

Helping to improve literacy

A county council spokesperson said: “The work of the county council’s library service is helping to improve literacy, and the challenge is a great way to encourage reading for pleasure during the long summer holiday. Children can also become library members for free or refresh their library card if it’s their first visit for a while. There are fun activities in libraries throughout the summer too, including a Character Hunt with a prize draw, and events which tie ‘books and beats’ together. With 2026 being the National Year of Reading, families are encouraged to ‘Go All In’ on whatever excites and interests them.”

Something for children & adults

Children who finish the challenge will be rewarded with a Read to the Beat certificate and medal. Even our youngest readers will receive a certificate and gold medal sticker. Adults may also like to pick up a few books for themselves on their family visit to the library.

Research shows that children enjoy reading and improve their skills when adults around them read too.

Founder Louise Stevenson of Worthing’s boutique marketing agency Tiger Marketing was awarded Silver in the Business Owner of the Year category at the 2026 National Business Women’s Awards on Friday 5th June 2026.

Inspiring & successful businesswomen

One of the UK’s most prestigious celebrations of female entrepreneurship and leadership, the National Business Women’s Awards honour the country’s most inspiring and successful businesswomen, recognising leadership, innovation and achievement across a wide range of industries. With hundreds of entrants and 12 finalists in the Business Owner of the Year category alone, winning silver is a remarkable achievement for Louise and her team.

The recognition comes during an exceptionally challenging year for Louise. Following a total hip replacement in March and a complex recovery, followed by the unexpected loss of her father in May, stepping onto the awards stage was a moment she never anticipated.

Reflecting on the award, Louise said: “To be recognised amongst so many incredible businesswomen is a huge honour, but this award really belongs to my team. Whilst my name may be on the trophy, they are the ones who kept everything moving. They supported our clients, welcomed new business, delivered exceptional work and ensured Tiger Marketing continued to thrive during one of the most difficult periods of my life. Without them, I don’t have a business and I am so proud and grateful to each and everyone of them.”

Celebrating success

The Grand Awards Celebration took place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London City, bringing together entrepreneurs and business leaders from across the UK to celebrate success, share experiences and build new connections. Louise attended the evening alongside Tiger Marketing’s Executive Assistant, Rebecca Andersen.

“The atmosphere throughout the evening was incredible,” said Louise. “The conversations, the inspiration, the support and the opportunity to meet so many talented businesswomen made it a truly unforgettable experience. I’d like to congratulate all finalists and winners and thank the National Business Women’s Awards team for organising such a fantastic celebration of women in business.”

As Tiger Marketing continues to grow, the award serves as a testament not only to strong leadership, but to the power of teamwork, resilience and the people behind the Tiger Marketing brand.

About Tiger Marketing

Tiger Marketing is a full-service marketing agency providing strategy development, campaigns, PPC, advertising, SEO, brand development and business mentoring.

Founded in 2013 by Louise Stevenson, is now a dynamic agency of seven Tigers and a trusted network of freelancers. Based at the Freedom Works coworking space on Worthing’s Chatsworth Road, Tiger Marketing is firmly rooted in the local business community, where they have crafted a reputation for delivering exceptional results while fostering meaningful, long-term partnerships.

A successful scheme that has prevented more than 128 tonnes of food from going to waste since April 2023 will continue for another year, thanks to funding from West Sussex County Council.

Open to everyone

Delivered in partnership with Sussex-based food rescue charity UKHarvest, the Community Food Hubs collect surplus food from retailers and redistribute it to residents across West Sussex. For a suggested donation of £5, visitors to the food hubs can choose from a wide selection of items that would otherwise have been thrown away. The hubs are open to everyone, with no referral required. Visitors also receive practical advice on how to make the most of their food and reduce waste at home.

Reducing food waste & local support

Wayne Lewis, Service Director for Environment and Public Protection, said: “Thanks to the programme’s continued success, we are pleased to extend funding for a fourth consecutive year, taking it through to April 2027. Reducing the amount of waste we produce and process in West Sussex is a key priority in our Council Plan. Diverting food products from retailers to residents through the food hubs not only allows us to support this priority, but to provide much-needed support to those most in need. The Community Food Hubs also help residents by providing advice on buying, storing and cooking food more efficiently, cutting waste and saving money.”

In addition to providing food and waste reduction advice, the hubs also connect residents with local support services. Organisations such as Mind UK, Age UK and West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service regularly attend, offering guidance and assistance.

Delivering positive impact

James Swann, UKHarvest Head of Programmes and Innovation, said: “Our relationship with the team at West Sussex Recycling and Waste Team encompasses so much of UKHarvest’s charity mission. We are delighted to continue our Community Food Hub partnership for another year, strengthening the impact across our communities, delivering positive impact that comes from the reach across West Sussex and the engagement through the supportive team of agencies that attend each event. Showcasing our NOURISHed free food education programme through taster sessions, enhances the important work being done by both West Sussex Recycles and UKHarvest. We’re excited about the year ahead!”

By editor Kris Thomas.
Nestled in the heart of the delightful town of Alfriston in East Sussex, The Alfriston Hotel and Spa offers a relaxed yet refined countryside escape just a few minutes’ walk from the charming centre, with its independent shops, galleries and traditional tea rooms. The setting feels quintessentially English. We were invited to visit the spa and enjoy lunch, and from the moment we arrived, the friendly welcome set the tone for the day. Staff were consistently warm, helpful and approachable, creating an atmosphere that felt both professional and genuinely relaxed.

Spa serenity with a view
The spa itself is an attractive and thoughtfully designed space, featuring a sauna and steam room alongside a large relaxation area with comfortable loungers overlooking the pool. Visiting during the May heatwave meant we could make the most of the outdoor facilities, and the pool quickly became a highlight. The pool is heated so can actually be used year-round for swimming. At the foothills of the South Downs, the peaceful setting encourages you to completely switch off, with the gentle hum of summer and uninterrupted countryside views enhancing the sense of escape.

Enjoy Rathfinny on the terrace

A bright and welcoming dining space
After a leisurely spa session, we headed to the restaurant, where large windows frame views of the terrace and lawns, filling the space with natural light. There’s a lovely community feel here too, with the grounds open to the public for drinks on the terrace or even an ice cream on the lawn. The Alfriston have partnered with nearby vineyard Rathfinny as their preferred wine supplier, and the terrace is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of world-class sparkling wine.We began with ‘nibbles’, which were generous in both portion and flavour. The squid pieces with alioli were tender with a light crispness, while the ‘popcorn’ cauliflower, coated in a sticky sweet glaze with spring onion and chilli, offered a moreish balance of sweetness and spice – pictured right.

Elegant, seasonal dishes
Starters continued to impress. The Spring Leaf & Beetroot Salad featured delicate cubes of beetroot scattered among fresh leaves and pomegranate, bringing both colour and freshness to the plate. I opted for the Cornish Crab Crumpets – moist crab paired with smooth avocado purée and a hint of tangy grapefruit, all served on soft, squidgy crumpets that absorbed the flavours beautifully. For mains, I chose the pan-fried cod, served with braised fennel that was soft, sweet and delicately infused with aniseed notes. Jeff selected the Wye salmon with puffed rice and pine nuts, adding texture to a perfectly cooked dish. Each plate was well balanced and thoughtfully presented.
A refreshing glass of non-alcoholic sparkling wine proved the ideal accompaniment on such a warm day.

Relaxed moments on the lawn
Service throughout lunch remained friendly and attentive, adding to the relaxed yet polished feel. Afterwards, we took coffee on the lawn beneath a large parasol, enjoying the peaceful surroundings before strolling into Alfriston along the riverbank, arriving via the village’s pretty church — a perfect end to the afternoon.

Final thoughts & contact details
The Alfriston Hotel and Spa combines thoughtful hospitality, excellent food and a beautiful setting. It feels both indulgent and welcoming — equally suited to a spa day,

Do you know someone who has given a great deal to the community and who deserves the reward of free vision correction treatment?

This could become a reality thanks to a new community campaign launching in Brighton and surrounding areas today, giving residents the chance to recognise and reward the unsung heroes making a real difference in their local area.

Celebrating inspirational individuals

Leading local eye care provider Optegra Eye Clinic Brighton is one of the first locations in the country to launch its ‘Who Deserves To Be Seen?’ campaign. Over the next four weeks (up to 26 June) you can nominate and celebrate inspirational individuals who go above and beyond to support their community.

Members of the public are invited to nominate someone they believe deserves recognition – whether they are a dedicated volunteer, community leader, or simply someone who consistently helps others. They simply need to live within 30 miles of Brighton and should want to improve their vision by reducing their reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

The winner will receive free vision correction treatment at Optegra Eye Clinic Brighton (subject to clinical suitability), alongside public recognition for their contribution through local media profile.

Julia Warnes, Clinic Manager at Optegra Eye Clinic Brighton, said: “We know every community has individuals who quietly make a huge difference to the lives of others – whether giving their time, energy, care or resources – and often having a big heart! This campaign is about shining a spotlight on those people and giving them something meaningful back as a thank you from the community. We’re delighted to be launching this initiative in Brighton and can’t wait to celebrate and reward the people behind the stories.”

Firefighters are urging residents to take extra care after crews attended six garden fires across West Sussex in less than a fortnight.

On 23 April, six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were called to a fire in the open on Church Road, Broadbridge Heath. Crews were faced with a significant blaze affecting two properties. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used high-pressure hose reels to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the fire is believed to have started accidentally.

The following day (24 April), firefighters were called to a garden fire at a mid-terrace property on Kidborough Road, Crawley. Five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform attended the incident, where the fire had spread from the rear of the building towards the roof. Crews used two hose reel jets and one main jet to extinguish the fire. There were no reported injuries, and the cause is also believed to be accidental.

Crews attended two further incidents on 30 April in Greencourt Drive, North Bersted, and Woodlands Way, Southwater. Two fire engines responded to a garden fire affecting the rear of a property in North Bersted, while four fire engines attended a garage fire in Southwater.

In Crawley, firefighters were called to two more incidents on 2 and 3 May. On 2 May, two fire engines attended a flat in Crosswater Road following reports of a balcony fire, which was found to be out on arrival. On 3 May, four fire engines were called to a significant fire in Pollards, Gossops Green, where eight gardens were affected. Crews found two sheds well alight and used high-pressure hose reels to extinguish the fire.

Simple steps to prevent fires

Crawley Fire Station Manager James McGrath said: “With more people spending time in their gardens, we want to remind everyone of some simple steps they can take to help prevent fires and keep themselves and their neighbours safe. Never leave barbecues unattended and always keep them well away from anything that could catch fire, including fences, sheds, dry grass, and garden furniture. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the correct method of ignition to light your barbecue. If you are using a gas barbecue, ensure the cylinder is turned off before changing it and always do this outdoors.

We would strongly discourage people from having garden bonfires, particularly in built-up residential areas, as they can spread quickly, affect neighbouring properties and cause significant nuisance and distress to nearby residents. Garden waste can be disposed of safely at your local recycling centre, using your district or borough council’s garden recycling collection service, or composted at home. Smoking materials should always be fully extinguished and disposed of safely. Residents with balconies should take extra care to ensure cigarettes are properly put out and never discarded from height, as they can easily cause fires in neighbouring balconies, gardens or external areas below.

Large lithium-ion batteries used in garden power tools, electric bikes and e-scooters can also present a significant fire risk. Avoid charging batteries overnight or when unattended, use the correct charger for the device, and unplug chargers once batteries are fully charged. Flammable materials stored in sheds and outbuildings should be kept securely and well away from potential sources of ignition.”

The last Air Quality Action Plan by Horsham District Council was published in 2020, and they now want to know residents’ views prior to publishing the next one.

This consultation provides an opportunity for residents and community stakeholders to share their views on the air quality in Horsham District and the measures proposed to improve it. The Council says it wants to know what issues matter most to you, where the Council should focus its efforts, and how they can continue improving air quality.

You can share your views in the consultation survey here:

The survey will run from Tuesday 26 May until Tuesday 23 June.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Waste Cllr David Skipp said:

“Whilst air quality across our District is generally good, we know that there are always improvements to be considered.

“Creating a clean and healthy district for everyone who lives, works and visits our area is a key commitment for us as a council.

“Our forthcoming Air Quality Action Plan will set out how we will do this. We want to develop any future plans in partnership with our communities, so do please take the time to complete our survey.”

Under the Government’s Local Air Quality Management regime, all district and borough councils have to review and assess air quality in their areas. If monitoring shows air quality is above the air quality objectives, then the Council must declare an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA).

Following this consultation, the Council will review all feedback and produce a revised Air Quality Action Plan, which will be valid for up to 5 years.

Editor’s Note

This news was sent to us by Horsham District Council on 26th May – the first day of the consultation. Therefore if any of our magazine readers were wondering why we had not published it in the May editions, this is the reason.
