Miles Japanese Maples from Sussex celebrates a decade of growth

This May, Miles Japanese Maples returns to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the fourth time, celebrating a significant milestone: the nursery’s 10th anniversary.

To mark a decade of growing maples in West Sussex, founder Miles Hayward is taking a back-to-basics approach, curating a display that champions the art of growing from seed. However, in the run-up to the show, the final lineup won’t be finalised until just weeks from their appearance – in fact in the polytunnels at Storrington, a ruthless selection process will be underway – a kind of horticultural version of The X Factor.

The Audition Process

“Selecting trees for Chelsea is a bit like managing a talent show,” Miles explains. “If you were creating a boyband, you wouldn’t want five lead singers who all sounded the same, and it’s the same with the Acers – I will be looking for star trees that complement one another and bring different talents and aspects to the staging at Chelsea.”

The selection process is always a “nail-biting” wait-and-see process, and this year Miles says it will be no different due to a wet and miserable winter. “The trees are currently just sitting there, waiting to wake up and I have to be incredibly mindful of what I can transport safely to the 4.6m x 2.4m stand, but ultimately, the trees I choose will have to perform. It isn’t until they come into leaf – sometimes as late as mid-April – that I’ll know who has made the final cut. I don’t have a big buzzer to press – it will just be me, closely inspecting the emerging foliage and seeing how the colours and forms of the trees work alongside one another.”

Miles at his nursery.
The Science of Seeds

Miles will be staging a ‘Lindley Display’ this year, which differs from the traditional displays in the Great Pavilion as it is aimed at providing information and knowledge that will help inform and enthuse visitors about a particular topic. The central theme of this year’s display will be propagation of Acers from seed.

Miles adds: “I get asked about propagation all the time and I’m hoping that the display will highlight the rewards of growing from seed and demonstrate that it’s a simple process that anyone can try at home. The display will feature a range of trees, from seedlings to mature specimens grown from seed but also some grafted trees that will show the amazing variety of maples. I’m hoping to remind visitors that almost every famous cultivar we love today – those named varieties – originally popped up as a ‘weird’ chance seedling at some point in the last few hundred years. You never know, the seedlings you grow next year might produce an exciting new form that we’ve never seen before!”

To illustrate this, the display will feature a mix of less-familiar Acer species alongside established grafted cultivars, showing the lineage and history of these spectacular trees.

Miles is determined to showcase the diversity of the genus Acer. This is a particular passion, being Vice-Chair of The Maple Society of Britain & Ireland (TMSBI), and he intends to introduce visitors to beautiful trees they may not even recognise as maples.

“I want to share Acers that make people say, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen that before,'” says Miles. Potential “wildcard” for the display include:

Acer buergerianum (Trident Maple): Beautiful, glossy dark-green foliage with three lobes, often used for bonsai but also planted as a street tree in Japan.

Snake Bark Maples: Known for their striated bark, adding winter interest and structural diversity, these can have very un-maple like leaves.

Acer campestre (Field Maple): Miles is even toying with the idea of including Britain’s only native maple, a personal favourite, to contrast against its exotic cousins.

A Decade of Dedication

Miles Japanese Maples has grown literally and metaphorically from a seed. Started in a back garden in 2016, the nursery now operates out of two large polytunnels just outside of Storrington and has been a member of the Plant Fairs Roadshow since 2018.

“I don’t tend to go for ‘New Plant of the Year’ at Chelsea,” Miles concludes. “I really love a lot of older cultivars or the unusual species that are rarely grown and I prefer to champion the trees that have dropped off the radar spotlighting those that may have been around for 200 years but have been forgotten. Bringing them back to the world’s most famous flower show feels like the perfect way to celebrate our 10th year.”

Miles Japanese Maples is part of the Plant Fairs Roadshow (PFR) – a collective of over 40 nurseries who host plant fairs at some of the best castles and gardens in the south of England. The PFR are supporting four stands at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show including: Daisy Roots from Hertfordshire, Pelham Plants from East Sussex, and Moore And Moore Plants from Billericay in Essex. www.plantfairsroadshow.co.uk

This regional premiere moves the action of Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous work from Japan to the rugged Highlands. The decision to relocate the story stems from a desire to preserve the show’s legendary wit while moving away from the racial stereotypes often associated with its original 19th-century setting.

Director Cate Couch, who has championed G&S since her school days, believes that shifting the landscape allows the brilliance of the satire to shine through more clearly for a modern audience.

“The society became aware that in Austin, Texas, they had decided to get away from the Japanese idea of The Mikado; to lose the racial stereotypes and set it in Scotland,” says Cate. “It’s very easy to set if we take it back to the medieval period where beheadings still happened… it made it very easy for us to make that transition.”

The aesthetic swap replaces kimonos with vibrant, historically accurate medieval tartans. However, the society is quick to reassure long-time fans that the musical integrity of the piece remains the priority.

“It is exactly the same show bar a few words changing to make sense of Scotland rather than Japan. It’s still the same songs—you will know everything—we’ve just changed the landscape around it,” Cate explains. “If something is changed, then the actual heart of the story, the music, and the words especially, have a different relevance. They perhaps become a little bit more alive because you’re seeing them through a different lens.”

By focusing on the universal nature of Gilbert’s “wordy” comedy and Sullivan’s iconic score, The McAdo aims to prove that these works are most powerful when they evolve.

“Come; because they are so funny. They are wordy funny, they are musically funny, and the story grabs you from the start,” says Cate. “It’s a real joy.”

The society has invited the public to go behind the scenes with a full director interview and rehearsal footage, available at YouTube.com/@eastbournegands.

Check before you travel

Train timetables are changing at Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express this spring and summer.

Passengers are being advised to check before travelling for changes from 17 May, as well as before school holidays, bank holiday weekends, and the normal programme of planned engineering work.

From 17 May, passengers will see several improvements (see editor’s notes) including:

Additional services on the East Grinstead line, on the Southern network

More punctual services across the network due to small tweaks to timing, based on feedback

An extra fast evening commuter service from King’s Cross to Hitchin

Better punctuality and fewer short notice platform alterations in the evening peak at East Croydon, thanks to small changes to the platforms trains are planned to use

John Whitehurst, Chief Operating Officer of parent company Govia Thameslink Railway, said: “These changes in May will improve punctuality and provide extra services for passengers. As the adjustments will vary route to route, we encourage people to check before they travel.”

Later, this summer, customers will also see a combination of additional trains running between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria to connect with early morning flights and more services during the middle of the day for some stations elsewhere for people going on days out. A small number of services will also be withdrawn on some routes where, because of the school holidays, the number of passengers falls.

Changes to train timetables can be viewed in online journey planners at the Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express websites.

• 2pm – The Big Barn Dance: The Bandstand area transforms into a massive open-air dance floor for everyone to join in.

• 4pm – The Farewell Finale: A communal final dance to close the festivities.

“Since 1972, we have aimed to entertain and delight with the intricacies of the English Morris,” said Trevor Marshall, Squire of the Broadwood Morris Men. “This year is no different. Whether you’re a folk enthusiast or just looking for a fantastic family day out, the Day of Dance is about bringing the community together for a massive, colourful party.”

The Broadwood Morris Men take their name from the legendary folk music collector Lucy Broadwood (1858–1929), who once spotted her one and only Sussex Morris-caperer at her home near Rusper. Today, that spirit is louder and more vibrant than ever.

Admission is free, bring your camera, dancing shoes, and plenty of energy!

In the centre of Chichester, The Ivy Brasserie is instantly recognisable thanks to its trademark green canopy, a familiar beacon on the cobbled pedestrianised shopping street. A handful of outdoor tables line the frontage, perfect for soaking up the atmosphere of the city centre on a brighter day, while inside promises glamour whatever the weather.

An interior made for lingering lunches
Step inside and you’re greeted by a vibrant, uplifting space that feels both grand and welcoming. Art deco influences run throughout, from the curved lines and polished surfaces to the rich colour palette. Globe ceiling lights cast a warm glow across the room, reflected beautifully in the tiled and mirrored surfaces that frame the restaurant. Interesting artwork adorns the walls, while real plants are everywhere, softening the space and adding a fresh, almost tropical feel.
Our comfortable booth was positioned facing the stunning bar, a real focal point of the room. The lighting here is particularly striking, with softly glowing shelves, statement mirrors and small mirrored tiles running along the edges, catching the light and adding drama without feeling over the top. It’s the kind of setting that immediately makes lunch feel like a treat.

A spring menu full of promise
We visited to sample the recently launched Taste of Spring menu, which offers excellent value at £27.95 for two courses or £32.95 for three. The menu showcases seasonal flavours while retaining the comforting, indulgent touches The Ivy is known for.

Fresh, elegant starters with flair
To start, the crab and avocado salad was as theatrical as it was delicious. Fresh crab meat was lightly dressed with herbs and lemon, served alongside toasted flatbread in a flamboyant silver crab with a Bloody Mary dressing that was poured at the table.
It was eye‑catching and genuinely tasty – a great way to kick off the meal (photo above inset).
The Buffalo burrata delivered rich, creamy indulgence, paired with red pepper tapenade, black olives and pesto. The zingy acidity of the red pepper provided the perfect contrast to the silky burrata, preventing the dish from becoming too heavy and keeping the flavours beautifully balanced.

Serloin Steak

Comforting mains done properly
The Ivy’s renowned fish cakes lived up to their reputation. Moist inside, generously packed with chunky salmon and smoked haddock, served with a runny egg and smooth pea purée. A fresh tomato salad on the side acted as a welcome counterpoint to the richness of the fish, adding brightness and acidity. My steak was cooked perfectly, with a delicious chargrilled flavour that spoke of confident cooking. The thick, juicy sirloin was served with bold mustard mayonnaise and fluffy‑inside, crisp‑outside triple‑cooked chips – simple, satisfying, hard to fault.

Frozen berries with warm white chocolate sauce

A “healthy” dessert… almost
We opted for frozen berries for dessert – though any health claims quickly disappeared when warm white chocolate sauce was poured over at the table, melting the berries and ice cream into something gloriously indulgent. No regrets.

Service, value and final thoughts
Service throughout was superb, with a team who strike the perfect balance between friendly and professional. Drinks are equally well considered, with an excellent selection of wines and an impressive range of both alcoholic and non‑alcoholic cocktails.
With its stylish setting, strong seasonal menu and excellent service, The Ivy Brasserie Chichester is highly recommended — whether for a special occasion or a spontaneous city‑centre lunch. By Editor Kris Thomas.

Internationally recognised British contemporary fine artist, Shazia Mahmood, creates coastal landscapes meant to be felt, not just seen. Working from her studio in Birdham, West Sussex, she paints the landscapes on her doorstep: the wild waves of Bracklesham, the shifting light over East Head and the vast beaches of The Witterings. She’s also partial to capturing the dramatic coastlines of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, another of her favourite locations to paint.

She’s been a full-time, professional artist for the past 30 years and is regularly featured in exhibitions at some of the UK’s most prestigious galleries. Shazia brings a depth of material knowledge to every painting. Her abstract layering techniques in oils and mixed media build richly textured surfaces that invite you to step into the work itself.

The original painting by Shazia ‘Moving Clouds Over East Head’ (51 x 76 cm, oils and mixed media on canvas) captures a crisp, clear day when the colours of East Head and the South Downs were shining. Valued at £1,200, this is a one-of-a-kind piece to own.

You can see more of Shazia’s work at shaziamahmood.com, and if you’d like to experience her paintings in person, she is opening her studio as part of the Chichester Open Studios Art Trail on 16–17 and 23–24 May. Find her at Studio 96/Peninsular Trail – the perfect opportunity to meet Shazia in her own creative space and see the work up close.

Stephen Rimmer LLP, one of East Sussex’s top-rated law firms, has acquired Bexhill-on-Sea solicitors Donaldson Dunstall, bringing together two well-regarded practices and reinforcing the strength of legal services available to the local community.

Photo (left to right): Colin Dunstall, Partner at Donaldson Dunstall; Grant Sanders, Partner at Stephen Rimmer; and Patrick Donaldson, Partner at Donaldson Dunstall

Founded in 1981, Stephen Rimmer LLP celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. Over four and a half decades, the firm has grown into a leading name in East Sussex and beyond, providing a comprehensive range of legal services including residential and commercial property, family law, private client services, employment law, litigation and dispute resolution, and company and commercial advice.

Known for combining technical expertise with an approachable, community-focused ethos, the firm has built lasting relationships with local individuals, families and businesses.

Donaldson Dunstall has long been a trusted presence in Bexhill-on-Sea since 1998, serving generations of local clients. The firm is particularly well known for its conveyancing, wills and probate, and private client work; all areas where personal relationships and continuity of advice are paramount. Its reputation for accessibility and straightforward, reliable service has made it a cornerstone of the local high street.

For Stephen Rimmer, the move represents a natural and community-driven step. The firm already has strong ties to Bexhill: many existing clients are based in and around the town, several partners have long-standing connections to the area, and a number of team members live locally.

Grant Sanders, Partner of Stephen Rimmer LLP, said: “We have a genuine affection for Bexhill and the people and businesses who make it such a special community. Donaldson Dunstall has built an excellent reputation over many years, and we are delighted that their partners and staff will be continuing with us.

“For clients, it’s very much business as usual – the same trusted faces, supported by the wider expertise and resources of Stephen Rimmer.”

Significantly, the acquisition ensures complete continuity for clients: all Donaldson Dunstall staff will remain in their roles.

For the wider community, the combination enhances the depth and resilience of legal provision at a time when many high street firms face increasing regulatory and economic pressures.

Patrick Donaldson, Partner at Donaldson Dunstall, commented: “Our priority has always been our clients and our team. Joining Stephen Rimmer allows us to preserve the personal service our clients value, while giving them access to a broader range of specialist expertise. We believe this is a positive and secure step forward for the future.”

The acquisition will take the team to more than 130 people across the four offices along the South Coast. Stephen Rimmer will provide career progression and development opportunities for those joining from Donaldson Dunstall, and will continue to proactively recruit talented teams and individuals across the region.

The regional legal market has experienced significant consolidation in recent years, driven by rising compliance obligations, technological change and growing client expectations. Against this backdrop, the acquisition reflects a long-term investment in maintaining strong, locally rooted legal services across East Sussex.

As Stephen Rimmer marks 45 years in practice, the firm sees the acquisition as both a celebration of its heritage and a clear statement of intent for the future: sustained growth, deeper community ties, and a continued commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible legal advice.

For clients old and new, the message is simple: the same personal service, now strengthened by shared expertise and a unified vision for the years ahead.

Need legal support in 2026? As a full-service law firm, Stephen Rimmer LLP can assist you at every stage, from conveyancing and family matters to employment law and wills and probate, providing clear, practical advice to help you move forward with confidence.

The St Catherine’s Hospice popular Midnight Walk is returning to the streets of Horsham on Saturday 6 June 2026 from 7.30pm.

Step out under the stars

With four distances to choose from – 2, 7, 13 or 17 miles – this popular event gives you the chance to step out under the stars and raise vital funds for local hospice care. Together with your community, you’ll experience an energetic night of celebration, reflection and remembrance. Whether you take part on your own, or with your friends, family or colleagues, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.

Running since 2008, the Midnight Walk is St Catherine’s flagship event bringing together over 650 walkers, 140 volunteers and raising significant funds for the hospice every year. All the funds raised at this memorable event help to provide specialist palliative and end of life care and support to people living with a terminal or life-limiting condition across West Sussex and East Surrey.

Starting at The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath, walkers will be treated to an energetic warm-up before being cheered on throughout their walk by volunteer marshals and regular refreshment stops to enjoy. The event also provides opportunities for walkers to remember the people they love and miss by pinning a photo and message on the Memory Wall or lighting a candle at our Reflective Space in Horsham Park on the 7,13 or 17 mile route.

Inspiring atmosphere

This year, Bill Dickie is walking in memory of his wife Michelle who was one of the first patients to be supported in St Catherine’s new hospice after it opened in December 2023: “The support Michelle received was above and beyond our expectations. I can honestly say the hospice was absolutely wonderful in every aspect, the care, compassion, and understanding of her needs and mine was truly exceptional. This year will be my third Midnight Walk. I first took part because I felt that I had to give something back to the hospice. The atmosphere on the night is amazing – it’s emotional but also magical and inspiring to meet people who have experienced the same loss as you and know how much the hospice has helped their loved ones too. I think Michelle would be proud of me taking part in the Midnight Walk. In 23 years of having cancer, she never once complained, so when my legs were aching last year, I could hear her saying, “Come on Bill, you’ve got this”.

Emma Butler, Midnight Walk event manager at St Catherine’s said, “We’re really looking forward to bringing our community together once again for our much-loved Midnight Walk. There’s something truly special about seeing hundreds of people step out under the light of the moon to raise money for local hospice care – with many walking in memory of their loved one. In 2025, our walkers helped us achieve a record-breaking year, raising £167,000 for our hospice – the highest amount we’ve ever raised from a single Midnight Walk. This is incredible achievement and has set the bar high for this year, but we’re ready to make Midnight Walk 2026 better than ever!”

Dark sky reserve anniversary

Since the National Park’s ever-popular Dark Skies Festival in February, the public have been voting for their favourite astrophotography image out of a shortlist of 25. The competition is extra special this year as the National Park is celebrating its 10th anniversary as an International Dark Sky Reserve, which is a prized status given to places with low light pollution and exceptional stargazing opportunities.

Embracing darkness

The National Park is announcing the winner of the People’s Choice during International Dark Sky Week, which encourages people to embrace the darkness and help protect precious dark skies that are vital for both people and wildlife.

Taking the top spot was a breathtaking image of the Cuckmere meanders and the immense starry sky above it. The photographer, Daniel Richards, who lives in Bickley, London, has won £100.

Daniel said: “I love the South Downs National Park for its stunning scenery and natural beauty, and especially its dark skies for astrophotography. This was my first dark moon outing and I had always wanted to capture the stunning Cuckmere River as it meanders down to the sea to meet the Milky Way. And wow it didn’t disappoint!”

The National Park’s astrophotography competition will return in the autumn. Find out more at www.southdowns.gov.uk

Castle View Court, the luxury residential park at Pevensey Bay on East Sussex’s sought‑after sunshine coast, will welcome prospective buyers to an Open Weekend on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April, as demand remains strong and the development continues to take shape.

The first quarter of the year has been exceptionally busy for the over‑45s park, with sales progressing well and interest prompting the final release of homes in Phase 2, following the success of earlier phases.

Set within 25 acres of East Sussex’s historic 1066 Country, Castle View Court enjoys a unique position bordered by a golf course and watercourse, with views towards the iconic Pevensey Castle.

The beaches of Pevensey Bay are just a short stroll away, while Eastbourne, the South Downs, and a range of local amenities are only minutes from the park.

In response to continued demand, eleven new plots have recently been laid, offering buyers an excellent opportunity to secure a new home within this established and friendly community.

Joe Brunton, Sales Executive at Castle View Court, said: “It’s been a really strong start to the year. Sales have been moving quickly, and because demand has been so consistent, we’ve now opened the final release of Phase 2.

“With new plots freshly laid and the park itself looking better than ever in the spring sunshine, the April Open Weekend is the perfect time for people to come and see what we offer.”

Visitors attending the Open Weekend will be able to explore the development, view available show homes, and speak directly with the sales team about the range of designs, layouts, and options available.

Children Reading for Life®, founder of the BeSeenReading® initiative, joined forces with Worthing Football Club earlier in the month to transform its stadium and training ground into a celebration of reading.

Making reading aspirational

BeSeenReading is a powerful initiative designed to make reading visible, accessible, and aspirational for children, families, and communities. First launched in summer 2025 by Polly Atkinson, Founder of Children Reading for Life in Arundel, the initiative proved hugely successful, sparking growing interest from local businesses across West Sussex keen to host their own reading days and encourage wider participation.

Worthing Football Club is one of the first sports clubs to embrace the campaign at scale, hosting an open training session on Friday 10th April during the Easter holidays, followed by a dedicated BeSeenReading matchday on Saturday 11th April with team players all holding a book before the game against Dagenham and Redbridge. With over 3,000 fans attending, the event featured book focused activities, giveaways and stadium wide messaging encouraging families and supporters of all ages to pick up a book and be seen reading.

The initiative comes at a pivotal time, aligning with the UK Government’s National Year of Reading Campaign 2026. Children Reading for Life has long championed this message and is now working alongside the National Literacy Trust to encourage parents to read to their children regularly and to nurture a love of reading for pleasure.

A powerful gift

Polly Atkinson, Founder of Children Reading for Life, comments: “Reading is one of the most powerful gifts we can give a child, it opens doors, builds confidence and shapes futures. The Government’s National Year of Reading reinforces exactly what we’ve been working towards: making reading a visible, shared and valued part of family and community life. Partnering with Worthing Football Club allows us to reach new audiences and show children that reading belongs everywhere, including a football match.”

By bringing together sport, community, and literacy, the initiative aims to normalise reading in everyday spaces and highlight the importance of positive role modelling, encouraging adults and children alike to be seen reading. Children Reading for Life continues to lead grassroots efforts to reverse the decline in reading for pleasure, equipping parents, carers, and educators with the tools to foster a lifelong love of books.

Host a BeSeenReading day

Businesses, sports clubs or communities interested in hosting a BeSeenReading day themselves can email Polly Atkinson at childrenreadingforlife@yahoo.com or can learn more here.

Funding specialist interventions

The charity, located in East Sussex, was awarded the grant thanks to generous donations from the UK public and partners. The grant will fund a senior paediatric physiotherapist for two years to deliver specialist early intervention for their children through their Learning Together Project. Supporting over 100 children a week, their specialist early invention services provide weekly, personalised, play-based therapy to build strength, improve coordination and develop essential motor skills such as sitting, crawling and walking—helping to increase independence and quality of life.

Enabling intensive support

Working within a specialist multidisciplinary team, the physiotherapist focuses on helping children develop physical abilities such as balance, coordination, and strength. They also empower parents with practical strategies to continue therapy at home and advise on appropriate equipment to enhance mobility. By enabling intensive support during these critical early years, this funding will help children achieve meaningful developmental milestones and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

Over the last 25 years, DVLCC has expanded its reach to support families from across the southeast, including West Sussex, East Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, South London and beyond. The charity receives no statutory funding and relies entirely on community support to provide its vital services. It costs over £700,000 per year to run the full service which is provided free of charge to families.

Vital step forward

Glenys Creese, CEO of DVLCC, said: ’’Thanks to the generosity of listeners from Global radio stations, this funding is a vital step forward in our mission to reach more children at the earliest possible stage of their development. By investing in specialist early intervention, we can give children with complex needs the best chance to build essential skills, gain independence and thrive. It enables us not only to expand our support to more families, but also to ensure that every child we work with has the opportunity to reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they face.”

DVLCC are one of the 39 small charities who received a share of the funding from Global’s Make Some Noise, for life-changing projects in local communities across the UK.

Every year, grants are awarded to small charities across the country to help fund the vital services they offer. Since its launch in 2014, Global’s Make Some Noise has supported 566 incredible local community projects and made a life changing difference to over 240,000 people across the UK.

Growing demand for support

Suzanne Ryder-Richardson, Director, Global Goodness; Global’s Make Some Noise, said: “This year has once again seen a rise in applications for our project grants, underlining the growing demand for this support and the urgent need across the UK. It is a clear reminder of how vital these projects are in providing critical help within communities, and why we are so proud to support them. We are incredibly grateful that, through public donations and the generosity of our partners, we are able to fund these amazing small, local charities delivering this life-changing work where it is needed most. As demand continues to grow, we remain committed to raising both funds and awareness, so that more people can access the help they need, close to home.”

Tickets now on sale

This summer, a huge range of events will come together under the Festival of Chichester banner, embracing another rich and varied five weeks of arts and community fun.

The festival comprises around 125 independently organised events across many genres taking place between Saturday 13 June and Sunday 19 July 2026. The brochure listing this summer’s programme can be downloaded from the festival’s homepage at https://festivalofchichester.co.uk or found in printed form from the Novium Museum (opposite Chichester Library on Tower Street), as well as from numerous businesses and venues in and around the city.

For fuller details of each event along with links for ticket bookings, head to the website above.

Festival events

As ever, festival events will be packed with local talent as well as some big names from further afield. With many dozens of options, it’s impossible to give more than the merest taster of what’s on offer, but as ever the range is vast. Amongst over 50 musical events are genres from jazz to country, folk-rock, psychedelia and even a chance to hear Jon Pickard play a 23-string harp guitar. Embark on a transcontinental ‘journey’ with the Chichester Symphony Orchestra; join an enticing Mozart recital from renowned pianist Young-Choon Park, and hear Handel’s Samson performed by Portsmouth Choral Union with The Consort of Twelve. There’s outdoor theatre at West Dean and Othello from the Lord Chamberlain’s Men in Paradise.

At least four events combine music with poetry or creative writing, while a vast range of fascinating talks and workshops include subjects from yoga to Sussex Women to the secrets of writing fiction.

Collaboration & community celebrations

The first weekend sees the official launch as part of the Cathedral’s now-annual SussexFest, and several other community celebrations join us this year including the ever-popular Chichester Gala, BookFest YA’s events for inspiring literary teenagers, a Priory Park mini-festival and several events aimed at encouraging debate and action on civic improvement and vision. The festival features several art exhibitions and is a great opportunity to explore the city further with a range of guided tours, whether uncovering history, learning about the trees in the parks or the textiles in the cathedral. There are also a vast range of boat trips around Chichester harbour, starting from Itchenor.

Whatever your interests are, there’s likely to be more than enough to keep you entertained for five fascinating weeks.

Festival events are each independently organised coming together under the Festival of Chichester banner, which itself is run by an entirely voluntary committee.
By editor Kris Thomas. Visiting Amberley Castle for afternoon tea is an experience that blends centuries of history with warm hospitality and delightful treats.

A unique location
We arrived with high expectations, this 900‑year‑old castle is known for its grandeur and culinary excellence and we were excited to be shown upstairs, past authentic suits of armour, to the dining hall.
From the moment we stepped inside, the sense of place was impressive. The dining hall feels majestic with arched stone windows, red studded chairs and a splendid hearth where a crackling fire adds a welcoming glow. We had a window table with views out to the gardens and castle wall ruins.

Indulgent experience
We chose the Full Afternoon Tea, a refined selection of savouries, scones, and sweets. It began with a crisp glass of locally produced Nyetimber sparkling wine and elegant finger sandwiches and warm savoury pastries – rich, buttery parcels that set the tone for what was to become a steadily indulgent feast. The homemade fruit scones were my favourite. Fresh from the oven and kept warm under ribbed silver cloches, the scones were perfectly crumbly and served with traditional thick strawberry jam and clotted cream. Then came the cakes, each one a miniature work of art. Delicately crafted and picture-perfect, they were every bit as delightful as they looked. We were determined to try them all, but in the end, we simply couldn’t manage every last bite. Fortunately, our server, Bothie, kindly offered to package up the remaining cakes for us to take home.
The service throughout our visit was friendly, attentive when needed, yet never intrusive. Bothie clearly enjoyed his role, and his warm personality added a lovely touch to our afternoon. We shared a light‑hearted conversation with him – at one point joking that we were far too full to move and might need a room for the night. Sadly, he couldn’t grant that wish, but his good humour made the moment memorable.

Medieval architecture & English luxury

Lounge

The castle’s public areas are open for guests to explore, and we enjoyed wandering through the lounges and imagining the many centuries of stories held within the stone walls. On warmer days, the terrace would be a beautiful alternative spot to linger and enjoy the surrounding gardens.
Overall, our afternoon tea at Amberley Castle was a beautiful blend of scrumptious food, historic atmosphere, and warm service. Whether you’re celebrating something meaningful or simply craving a peaceful escape in a standout setting, this experience is one to treasure. It’s a wonderful way to mark a special occasion with a special person.

AudioActive can confirm that Chief Executive Adam Joolia will be stepping down in late August, following his appointment as the new Chief Executive Officer of Youth Music, where he will begin in September. Adam has led AudioActive for nearly two decades, helping to grow the Sussex-based charity into a nationally recognised organisation creating social change through music and supporting the journeys of many talented young artists.

Adam will remain with AudioActive over the coming months. He and the team are working closely with Trustees on a smooth transition. A process to appoint Adam’s successor will begin in due course.

Adam says: “Despite a challenging backdrop for the youth, community and grassroots music sectors, AudioActive is thriving and in a strong position. I feel this is the right time to pass the baton to fresh leadership, with the organisation well placed for its next chapter”.

Heartwarming illustrated children’s adventure story from Worthing-based author Jane H. Wood.

In a snowy forest, two squirrels, Stikki and Rella, face danger and mystery while searching for lost food and each other. As a food thief threatens the woodland, the animals must unite to uncover secrets, survive the cold, and protect their sacred tree.

Winter has arrived in Hazy Hills Wood, covering everything in a blanket of snow. Food is hard to find, and the animals are getting hungry. To make things worse, there is a scary food thief on the prowl.

Stikki heads out into the cold to find his secret stash, but when he doesn’t come home, Rella goes searching for him. A frightening journey looms ahead as Stikki and Rella are forced to confront their enemies and the dreaded longlegs.

Deep in the heart of the ancient wood stands the animals’ sacred ash tree. When Brodboar the badger spots something strange high in the tree’s branches, he is shocked by the discovery and begins to worry. Is it a warning? With Stikki and Rella still missing, can the woodland animals work together to find their friends before it’s too late?
A woodland adventure story for children aged 8-12, filled with magic, mystery, and courage.

The project will provide a safe, dry shelter for rescued animals during the harshest months of the year – including residents like Roo, Jamie and Jack, who rely on the sanctuary for lifelong care after being rescued from neglect and the farming industry.

As part of the campaign, entrants have the chance to win one of three of Jana Reinhardt’s best-selling hummingbird jewellery pieces, with a total prize value of £920:

A spokesperson for Jana Reinhardt said: “Animal welfare has always been at the heart of what we do. For our 20th anniversary, we wanted to give back in a meaningful way – and supporting Surge Sanctuary felt like the perfect fit.”
