Edgar Allen Poe, to Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. The Golden Age of detective novels after the First World War with Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers amongst many others. The explosion of crime novels in recent years, which now accounts for over a third of all books sold – through to today’s “Cosy Crimes” epitomised by Richard Osman.
