Event Short Description

Local historian Chris Hare tells the fascinating story of local smugglers who frequented Slindon.

Event Information

Slindon woods and downs were a favourite haunt of smugglers whose job was to ensure the disposal and distribution of contraband (alcohol, tobacco, lace and perfume), using their secret bunkers and haunts. The Downs provided a signalling base and signs were flashed to boats at sea. With local knowledge of roads and bunkers, the smugglers and their horses, could outwit the excisemen. Everyone welcome.
