Event Information

The Silent Teacher: Lessons from Dissection

Content warning: This lecture will involve images of the human body and example dissections. Attendees must be 14+ and those aged 14-17 require parental consent. Book your place.

Today over 1,300 donors are needed per year in the UK and Ireland, and one single body donation could affect the lives of around ten million patients. Professor Claire Smith explores lessons from the deceased, examining what motivates donors and why donors are still needed to train medical and allied health care students today. Professor Smith will explain the latest thinking on how students learn anatomy with examples from all over the human body, highlighting our individuality and why we are not textbooks.

At the end of this interactive talk, there is an option to have a fascinating, up-close look at examples situated in workstations within the Anatomy Laboratory.

Please note: Strict rules apply to access to the Anatomy Laboratory; this session will be conducted under the University of Sussex Human Tissue Authority Public Display Licence. You will need to adhere to the rules, including putting on appropriate PPE, and all mobiles/cameras will be left in a secure area.

Free event. Bookings are essential; please book for the lecture, and request a place on the guided tour, if desired. If you would like to attend, please register online no later than 48 hours prior to the event.
