Event Short Description

Talk by Tony Gledhill GC on the history of these historic awards with details of some of the holders

Event Information

Tony Gledhill is the Treasurer of the Victoria Cross & George Cross Association, so he is well able to discuss the background of both awards together with an insight into the lives of many holders.
After leaving school Tony joined the Metropolitan Police. On 25 August 1966 as a constable with his partner, Constable Terry McFall, he was on patrol when they were ordered to chase a car driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Fifteen shots were fired at their police car during the ensuing chase. The criminals’ car crashed into a lorry and they attacked the police officers, who were trying to arrest them. Both police officers were injured in the confrontation but managed to subdue the men until assistance arrived. For this, Tony was awarded the George Cross.
Tony was promoted to Detective Sergeant in 1976. When he retired from the Police in 1987, he joined the Royal Mail (Post Office Investigation Department). Tony is now retired.
