Event Short Description

‘Royal Sussex Regiment’ – Lord Lowther’s Lambs 1914 and their memorial garden at Herstmonceux.

Event Information

Three battalions, known as the Lowther’s Lambs, were recruited by Lord Lowther in 1914 following Kitchener’s Appeal. Whilst recruiting, a farmer from Lancing called Passmore, donated a South Downs lamb as a mascot. The lamb remained behind at Lord Lowther’s home of Herstmonceux Castle when the battalions went overseas. His grave within the grounds now forms the centrepiece of the Regimental Memorial Garden at the castle. The Passmore family still farm the same land at Lancing and a family member opened the Garden when it was consecrated.

The talk will be followed by a presentation of artefacts from the Royal Sussex Regiment collection.

Please note, this talk will start after the Arundel Museum Society AGM, which will have taken place before this and is only open to members.

Tickets are available via the Museum office, or on Eventbrite.

There will be refreshments to buy on the evening.

Doors open from 6.30pm, with the talk starting promptly at 6.45pm.
