From China through central Asia to the Mediterranean, the Silk Road was a highway for the interchange of beliefs, art and valuable commodities. With the invasion by Alexander the Great, early Persian routes spread east to India. Then Chinese stability fostered trade in jade, silk and ceramics, in exchange for horses, pearls and gold.
