Our Speaker, Michael Smith will deliver the background knowledge of the Franklin Expedition, the disaster that evolved and discuss what the shipwrecks may reveal. The expedition to the Arctic in 1845, to find the North West Passage, was the biggest disaster in the history of Polar exploration. Two ships, and 129 men disappeared in the Arctic ice. The mystery has lasted 170 years but due to the discovery of the two lost ships above the Arctic Circle, the mystery of what happened may be solved, in due course. Michael Smith is an author and journalist, who specialises in the history of Polar exploration. He has written books on Polar history and lectured extensively. He is a former award-winning journalist with The Guardian and the Observer.
