Event Date:
Start time: 18:00 Max Egremont’s The Glass Wall, based on the small Baltic states that were caught between Germany and Russia during wartime – in conversation with Stewart Collins In the closing event of this year’s Literary Week, Petworth Festival President Lord Egremont talks to Stewart Collins about The Glass Wall, his recently published look at the Baltic states. Few countries have suffered more from the convulsions of the 20th century than the tiny states that inhabit the eastern Baltic – nations that have found themselves caught between the giants of Germany and Russia, their land having regularly provided the route for multiple military surges and retreats, and the consequent devastation. The Glass Wall features a wide cast of characters, and by telling the stories of warriors, victims, poets, artists, rebels and emperors, Max Egremont reveals a part of Europe whose frontiers may still be in doubt.
