Event Short Description

3 local heritage walks exploring traditional rural crafts as part of Heritage Open Days.

Event Information

Three heritage walks exploring traditional rural crafts will take place this September as part of Heritage Open Days (11–20 September), England’s largest festival of history and culture.

Inspired by the 2026 theme, “Everyday Histories”, local walking guide Rural Strides will lead walks focusing on three traditional crafts once central to rural life: flint knapping, stonemasonry and wheelwrighting.

Participants will visit working craftspeople and learn about skills that helped shape the local landscape and communities. The flint knapping walk explores one of humanity’s oldest crafts, while the stonemasonry and wheelwrighting walks highlight trades that built and sustained village life for centuries.
Rural Strides founder Malinka van der Gaauw said: “These walks offer a chance to meet craftspeople in their workshops and connect with the skills and traditions that shaped everyday life in the past.”
